We have all done it:) played around on google earth at area 51. I found this while looking around. It's shape seemed out of place to the rest of its surroundings. So I started to do a little research on the net about this shape I was seeing, the more I looked the more it started to look like this

This is what I found, yes they are "runways' in the V shape. Odd that you could not get a plane on either of them. Also note the road/runway that ends and then a very small 'road' exits the end and continues on.

I know NOTHING about antennas or aliens or airplanes for that matter. Some things just stand out.

My question is then, is it possible to use the earth as an antenna? Inlaid copper wires or whatever? I mean if you wanted to communicate "out" (away from earth) vs. Across (point to point on earth) wouldn't it make sense to us the earth (horizontal) vs. a vertical array?

So here are the GE coords. 37 16 28 71N x 115 48 13 74W

Zoom in some of the lines are very faint, but I think if one could extrapolate the curve you would find some interesting things. Also zoom out to fin d straight lines do connect to make a vast network. These are not roads, as they would follow the path of least resistance, these lines run straight geological formations. That is step 3 for me. Back in while to see what you guys think.

Okay, you got me. I must be very thick.

However, since runways are mentioned, it's worth noting that, with the change of the magnetic north, runways also need to change, to keep pace with it, in order for pilots to locate it without visuals.

LOL! And here I was, trying to be polite about it... :p

PS. Oh, THAT Area 51! I was wondering why everyone was supposedly playing around on Google Earth at OUR Area 51....

PPS. I can honestly say, I have never even considered viewing Area 51 via Google Earth. And oddly enough, I consider it a sign of good mental health that I haven't.... Just to mention, of course. ;)

Had to convert coordinates: 37.274641667 -115.8038167

If you zoom into the images you'll see a bunch of runways, with number labels on either end:
Longest is "32" (320-degrees re "Magnetic North")...it obviously used to be much, much longer.
To it's Right is "32 R", and to it's Left is the marked "30" taxiway. These are clearly concrete.

On (dry) Groom Lake itself, the lower part of the "V" is labeled "27L" and "27R" at one end,
and "09L" and "09R" at the other. The upper part of the "V" is labeled "03L" and "03R" at one end
and what appears to be "21L" and "21R" at the other.

Experimental aircraft have landed on dry lake beds for many decades, including the Bell X-1, X-2,
X-15 series and first Shuttle STS-1 shown here:

So the labeled airstrips at Groom Lake aren't very mysterious after all......

Most major airports have runways running in different directions to minimize cross-wind conditions:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runway
Edwards Air Force Base has numerous runways on the (dry) lake bed, including World's Biggest
Compass Rose at 34-deg 57' N by 117-deg 52' W (39.95, -117.87).

PS: Declination at Edwards AFB has decreased by 3 degrees since 1951. So won't need to change
the runway number very often, since the runway numbers are only to nearest 10-degrees:

FYI: The Aricebo Radio Telescope was constructed in the bowl of a crater....and searches for SETI:
