So I've been playing with the NEC optimization scripts found on nikiml's site and decided to make one specifically for the 2020 repack channels found in Hamilton.

Buffalo UHF stations are within 15 degrees of each other with a VHF found at 20*. Toronto comes in at about 65-75* depending on aim. I imagine that not too different for anyone on the mountain. In my particular case one set of Hamilton stations is pretty much LOS for Grand Island and the other is at the cusp of a null at 35*.

I built a 7-51 GH8n3 from niks site earlier in the year given it looked to have the best side lobes for Toronto.




The three low power stations OMNI1,OMNI2,CITY are not reliable at their current freqs (RF40,44,47), not even there half the time. Which seems if funny since WPXJ which has 20db less power on paper but has the benefit of being 5* off center of the main lobe comes in pretty well, except for some issues during the morning sun passing in front and some random fading.


I did a quick 24h optimize for 174-216/470-608 but the side lobe appears to have disappeared. So that's when I decided to try for a Hamilton specific build. Plan is to do one for outside, but it'll cost a bit of height compared to attic install (22 feet to 15 feet AGL). Based on google maps the east wall looks to aim a few degrees south of CHCH/Grand Island for a Toronto lobe of 68*. Early results looked promising, so I decided to try one on the other PC for a better Buffalo aim at WPXJ (Toronto 73*) and see what happens.

same for other build just changed target by 5 degrees
Currently I have the V1 build going for both aimpoints. Side lobes for RF17-20 26,30 are all doing ok compared to baseline but there is a couple of things ive noticed from the V1aim118 model.

The gain peaks at 31,32 and starts to fade a bit by the time it gets to 34,36. I dont know if its because I set a target for 35 so its trying to optimize for a higher gain on that channels despite setting target for -5. I'm thinking for V2 I should ditch any requirement for 35 and maybe shift 30 off the mid to its starting frequency to give more space for gain at 33,34,36. Also having a specific target for each channel in the 17-20 block may be giving it a height weight for Toronto in the optimization calculation.

RF16 is hovering around 1.5db less than baseline. I'm assuming this is because of my ask for 17-20. If I didnt have to worry about 16, I wouldn't care if 17-20 got even higher at the expense of 14,15 since those are super strong regardless. So for V2 I think I'll narrow down the request to the midpoint of the four channels and see if it gives back some of the sidelobe to help out 16. I dont even know if its worth the effort given its adjacent, same bearing, and big power difference compared to 14,15.

RF7 is also lower by 0.7db from baseline. A bit disappointing since it ends up dropping the upper VHF down to 6db gain but not getting a better result on RF7.

Since they take a longtime, I stopped the optimization at around 350 iterations to get a feel for how its progressing. Once I narrow it down to a few good ones, I'll let them finish to see where it ends up. Starting model is gh8n3_9V53_14u7.nec.

V4- same as V3, noticed that L3 variable maxes out at .65, changed to .7 [all prior opts change height from original 52" to 57", this change shortens height by 2" to 55" at the cost of 2" wider either side. Pretty good result, upper Buffalo 33-36 are about as good as I've gotten so far, same with Toronto 30, 17-20 dips a bit by RF20, but 20 is rock solid right now with 3db less gain so that is just me being picky. RF16 is also doing ok, with a nice dip little dip going back to 15,14. Probably wont help with getting 16 but hey I'll take it. 7 and 8 also doing as good as before. Only real annoyance is the massive loss on 13. Its mostly a repeat of content on 9, but there is local news for a little variety outside of Toronto.]

Next I'll add a target for 13 see if I can get it back to around 0 gain from rear without worsening anything. Beyond that I dont think I want to lengthen L3 anymore as it already runs 15" past its support if I do a similar style build as in the attic. Maybe try a different -F target?

With the repack upon us, here's my results. First one only considers Buffalo targets, the next two try for Toronto side lobes, with a little trade-off on Buffalo. These necs are not the final optimizations, but are cherry picked for their null on 35.
