The Philips I got from walmart wouldn't work at all.

Yeah, they can be hit or miss. Take it back and get another. You want the outdoor type.

i don't know what the old antenna was. it didn't have any visible identification on it.

If you post a picture of it, we may be able to figure out the make and model.
