I'm using mythtv and sdlmame but I cannot get the remote to work with sdlmame to exit, or do the coin insert and player up buttons. I've entered this into my ~/.lircrc file:

#this kills mame - not pretty, but it does the job as SDLMame does not support lirc
begin
prog = irexec
button = ESC
config = killall mame
end

This should exit sdlmame but it does nothing. I've also created entries for other buttons but they do not work either.

I've done some reading that indicate I might need to use xmacro-warp but I'm not sure. IS anyone else using a remote with sdlmame?

I don't use sdlmame, but I do use lirc.

Two things I would look at.

1 test if lirc running
run "irw" at command line and push buttons on the remote to see something like:
0000000000000008 00 1 Sony_RMT-V102D
0000000000000008 01 1 Sony_RMT-V102D

(sony is one of my remotes)

2 check to see if killall can find your process
Code:
ps -A | grep -i mame
If nothing shows up try "ps -A --forest" .
It might be running under a different user account. Your lirc may not be authorized
to stop mame.
On my machine lircd and my target processes run under the same user account.

Also this may not be a problem but in my ./lircrc file I specify the remote in each button definition.
Code:
begin
        remote = Sony_RMT-V102D
        button = arrow_left
        prog = mplayer
        config = seek -10
end
