Some units are sold w/ lifetime map updates, but if that's not the case and you have recently purchased the device, you have something like 30 or 60 days (iirc) to get free map updates from Garmin's website.
Alternatively, you can purchase a lifetime map updates card for ~us$70 on places like Amazon.
The 255w comes with a 60 day period to upload the latest map. After that you are on your own. Not much sense in purchasing a ~70 US lifetime map for a $99 GPS I would think. It is unfortunate that Garmin feels the need to charge for updates on their lower priced units..
These were the same units that were the expensive ones a year or so ago, not they are dumping them in favor of yet the latest model.
