Garmin today announced the Edge 500, a lightweight high-sensitivity GPS receiver designed for performance cyclists.

The Edge 500 features a low-profile, quarter-turn mount that fits on the stem or handlebars. Garmin says the device can be switched quickly and easily between bicycles and connects wirelessly with ANT+ compatible third-party power meters.

As for the 500, though - it looks quite impressive! I recently purchased the 705, and it seems to have the same features/functions as the 500, but with the added ability to accept a wireless ANT+ power input as well (and an MSRP close to double the Edge500).

Some things I don't like about the 705 (not sure how the 500 handles these issues):
- no true odometer; i.e., if the bike's moving, but you don't hit the START/STOP button, even though the GPS sees that you're moving, no mileage is being added on to the odometer

- no auto power-off. If you come home from a ride, take a look at your ride stats and park your bike, you come out the next day and.....dead battery. Why they can't put in a "if bike ain't moving for an hour, switch off the power" feature totally eludes me.
