I have a Sharp LC-42D65U, which I bought in 2008 and it works well. Never a problem with it. Perhaps he had a lemon.
Nah, the D62Us were dogs. I still have one and although I've been lucky with the longevity of it but it has all the other flaws: terrible banding and a hum at some brightness levels. The OP is probably better off with the replacement.

As far as upgrading I'd pass on the Quattrons not just out of spite for the D62U's flaws but for the almost misleading advertising about the benefits of the yellow pixels that in reality expand the colour space by a fraction.
