The Flames’ 7 P.M. MT game tonight in Chicago is being joined in progress at 7:30. This is because TSN has rights to Wednesday nights in Canada and no one can start another broadcast till TSN signs off. So the Flames’ fans will wait till TSN’s Toronto/Pittsburgh ends ands then get their team on Sportsnet. The same will happen on March 9 when Calgary heads to Dallas.

Did anyone see this? If so, was it weird? I know they are road games but you would think that the Flames could had tried to work something out with Dallas and Chicago so the games would start 30 minutes later.

They already worked it out so the games could be 30 minutes later. Usually games are 7:30pm CT in Chicago and Dallas at the latest, they got them moved to 8:00pm CT. That is usually the latest the NHL will ever let games start, even playoff games.

If anything it is poor scheduling on the NHL's part when they know TSN is going to have an exclusive window from 7-9:30pm. There are only three exclusive windows all week (one in US, two in Canada). One is Monday when a game is on Versus (US only), one is Wednesday when a game is on TSN (Canada only) and the other is Hockey Night in Canada (Canada only).

Back when there was PPV games, the Flames, Oilers, Senators and Canucks could get around these by putting games on PPV. Now they can't do that since they canned the PPV idea for Sportsnet One games.

Was the Chicago feed available as part of NHLCI so you could see the game in its entirety using the Hawks feed?

Also, does NBC not have an exclusive window for Sunday games?

No, I was asking about an exclusive USA window.

Of course, that then would have a bearing. The only was TSN (non-exclusive national)/Sportset (regional) get around the Monday night exclusive game on Versus is by having a Canada v. Canada game. If a USA team plays, the game can't air in the states so it won't happen.

Some of the southern teams still play Monday nights and just don't show the game (most southern teams don't show all 82 games on TV like all the teams in Canada now do). Some of these games were against Canadian teams (Leafs played a lot of Monday night games this year vs. Southern teams). Florida/Atlanta/Nashville/Carolina are the most notable for this.

If you ever watch Sportscentre and see what looks like a poor PQ and just one camera doing wide follow the whole game. That is one of the games that neither team can air, and that is the only camera they pipe to the networks for highlights.

On Centre Ice, they often (not always) show those games with the arena scoreboard feed and the home team's radio crew.

NBC does have an exclusive window in the US, but since 99% of the time there aren't any other games, it doesn't really matter.

A friend of mine who lives in Lethbridge said that for the first 30 minutes people with Centre Ice would have the Chicago feed. Yes, NBC is exclusive for its time slots.

You are correct, it is rare for late games and other central timezone teams have started their home games at that time too. Back on Sunday, April 15, 2007 the Stars hosted a playoff game against the Canucks and it started at 2030h Central time.

The PPV games partially helped solve conflicts. Those teams had to ask permission from the CBC and TSN to have a PPV game during their telecasts and were sometimes refused. For the western teams, there was only one PPV channel and that had to be shared so if one team was using it, the others were out of luck.

Last week, Shaw Direct NHLCI viewers outside the Flames region could watch the CGY/CHI in standard def. They were showing the Sportsnet West feed.

And Sportsnet was running full commentary and such for the period before the Flames region picked the game up?

The game production on Sportsnet west was as if they weren't being pre-empted.... commercials and all.

and what happened when the Flames region joined the game, just a bunch of quick replays on stuff that had already happened to that point, similar to how HNIC will join a late running first game?

just a continuation except the line up cards were shown on the bottom of the screen. The goals were recapped at the normal breaks, just like any other production.
