Fibe, Questions..

Im thinking of ditching bell tv after 5 years. Love the service, prices are good but sick of satellite tv losing signal in bad storms. The new Fibe tv service is available in my area.I currently have the fibe25 internet. Ive read that its a max of 4 set top box's. My question is i have 5 tvs. I want to change to fibe tv and i obviously want to watch my 5 tv's so i need 5 set tops. The most set top box's that will ever be on at once is 4 ( 3 sd and 1 hd). Now is it possible to get a 5 box install in this case? the 5 tvs will NEVER all be used at once. Unfortunately this is a deal breaker for me.. I need the 5 tvs or ill have to either settle for bell tv or make the swap back to robbers. I'd call be all ask but i already know ill call 5 times n get 5 different answers so i always come here first

Thanks in advanced folks.

Why are the IPGs and other displays used by the Fibe TV app (or Fibe tv on my computer) and the STB different?
Rogers has the same issue with their digital TV. The bottom line is, different manufacturer, different hardware, different software, maybe even a different guide service. Despite the high cost, proprietary hardware from TV services is usually poorly designed, usually obsolete and are often barely capable do the job they were designed for due to the use of inadequate hardware, and poor software development and support. The only proprietary TV service hardware I've ever used that I considered adequate for the job were the Bell 92xx line of receivers and that was only after the maker undertook a concerted effort the fix all the bugs, which took about 5 years.

Hi all,

I have the Bell PVR and one remote receiver. The PVR works well but the remote receiver is terrible. It's slow and often needs to be rebooted. I've had five techs to the house and they all agree it's an outdated piece of junk.

Can I buy a PVR from Amazon and use it instead? One Bell rep told me that we're only allowed one PVR per account but I don't see how they'd know the difference if I got rid of their worthless piece of junk and subbed in my own receiver, which happens to be a PVR. Thoughts? Thanks...
I've owned the Bell VIP2502 receiver for at least a decade and it has been flawless, and I have to admit I don't read too many complaints on this forum about it, so maybe you just has a dud.
There have been similar complaints about the VIP2502 from time to time. As long as it's on the same network, something like an Apple TV 4K with the Fibe app should provide similar functionality for most purposes. Cheaper streamers such as a Chromecast wGTV 4K, or Fire Stick 4k+ should also work. The VIP2502 could be kept as a backup if required for functions the Fibe app doesn't support.

I've had it replaced three times. So the dud theory is not likely the issue, but thanks for chiming in, elyk. I have two Firesticks on other TVs and they work fine, but you can't record from them. Back to my original question: Can I buy a PVR and connect it or will the Bell software not allow a second PVR? I did ask them a year or so ago and they said "no" to a second PVR but I wasn't sure if that was "no to them supplying one" or "not at all."

The answer is NO, you can't buy a third-party PVR. Every PVR or Set-Top Box has to be authorized by the provider in order to access the head-end, so they will only authorize devices that are in their database of serial numbers.

On the plus side, I just checked Fibe TV equipment on Bell.ca and I see they are now offering new 4K boxes with voice remote to access Cloud PVR. They should have the same speed as the 4K PVR, so you may now be able to get a better replacement. I assume that means Fibe TV customers can now have 4K service to more than one TV.
Our condo switched to Bell Fibe TV back in September. Part of the deal gives us the main portal plus one additional box. Although both boxes are activated, we never use them. I just use the Fibe TV app on the Amazon fire stick. It basically saves me an HDMI port on each of the sets.
Thanks for the great ideas, guys! I'll check out these new boxes form Bell. Anything is better than that crappy VIP2502 👿!
My Parents are with Fibe and they wanted another Receiver.Told them that I would look into it since they are very old. They have a 2262 and a wireless 2502.I bought a 2202 on Marketplace,I checked the Mac adress to make sure it was a bought Receiver and it was.So I went to there place, called Bell to have it activated, but it was asking me for an 8 letter, digit, activation code.Called Bell again, told them that I needed a code. They tried rebooting the 2262 from there end, still didn't work so they told me that they needed to send a Technician.I told them ,why can't you supply me the code and it was just a lost cause because they told me that they needed to send a Tech.I was wondering if they don't want to activate a used non rented Receiver and they just want my Parents to rent another one.
I have a friend who used to work as a tech support person - and not one of those "tech wannabes" from somewhere overseas. He said the first goal of all tech support people is to sell you something, NOT help you. At first, they sound really empathetic and concerned that you're not happy. Then they go through their list of prepared responses. After that, they go for the jugular. No wonder they wouldn't give you the code. There's no profit for in doing so for Bell.

Hi Dr. Dave. Thanks for the note. I checked and sure enough, Bell is now offering a replacement to their VIP 2502 piece of junk. It's a DVR for the same price per month. I wonder if it is networked with the original PVR. That is, can I record on the original one and watch it on the new DVR through a different TV - and vice-versa? I'm going to call them to find out.

It should allow you to do that, but I'm not sure if their "Cloud PVR" is just another name for access via the Bell Fibe TV app which has some limitations. There is another thread Fibe TV App For Satellite TV which is basically the same and has more recent posts.

If you call them, you might want to confirm how long recordings are available in the Cloud PVR.

I can't speak about other companies, but in over 40 years with Rogers I haven't seen that happen. In fact, it's usually the other way around. I call them when I want to see about improvements. On the other hand, if I'm calling about a technical problem, I usually immediately escalate to 2nd level, as I know I'd be wasting my time with 1st level.

BTW, I used to do 3rd level support at IBM and never tried to sell anyone anything.

I found some info and started a new thread - "New Fibe TV" with Cloud PVR and Voice Remote

It's a full-fledged Cloud PVR - Store up to 320 hours of content, record up to 10 shows at once, and keep them for 365 days. I'm not sure if you can combine the two, or if you have to switch over completely. If you find any more info, you can post in the new thread.
At last a Canadian service with a half decent amount of cloud PVR storage. I've seen ads for US services with 1000 hours or unlimited hours. Canadians are getting relatively small amounts or must pay ridiculous extra fees for cloud storage.

Thanks, Dr. Dave. I'll do that. Yes ExDilbert, us Canadians take up the you know what for all these services. Our cell prices are the highest on the planet, as far as I've heard. They blame our "vast geography" for the extra cost. Bull!! It's called "greed."

The more storage, the more server space required and the higher the costs. IgniteTV has 200 hours and I consider that more than adequate. This is, after all, a time shifting device, not a storage device. I do have the following comments.

1. I don't see why programming is only kept for one year, as long as you're under the 200 hours. Perhaps they could have 50-100 hours that can be long term. This may have to do with rights holders though and not the service providers.
2. With IgniteTV, you cannot purchase additional storage.
3. That's not really Rogers fault, they license the technology from Comcast. I believe they even use Comcast's servers, so the blame may not lie with Rogers (or other Canadian providers).
I time shift a lot of stuff for, sometimes a long time. That's due to broadcasters tendency to air everything in the same few weeks in the Fall and Winter. The shows get watched during slow times such as the Summer.

1. The one year limit probably is required by the copyright holders. I suspect they would like it to be much less than that.
2. Teksavvy charges $10/mo for 50GB PVR space and $15/mo for 100GB. Not sure if more can be purchased. To be fair, they do have lower prices for other things but if they are put together like Rogers Ignite it starts to look almost as expensive as Rogers.

The choices are 1 year or until space is needed. I take that to mean it will stay forever, unless you run out of space.

On IgniteTV, a programme will be kept for up to one year if so labelled, or deleted if space is needed, if so labelled. Programmes that are a year old will be deleted without warning at the one year mark. If you don't have any programming labeled "as needed" then I assume you won't be able to record if you reach your maximum 200 hours. I don't know if there is a warning at say 90%.

I don't recall seeing anything on that latter topic on the Rogers forum. I do recall people complaining that their one year-old programming did get deleted at the one year mark. We're a bit off topic for this thread, so please use the IgniteTV thread if you wish to discuss IgniteTV further.
