It's an interesting concept. Also interesting is the fact you can't record or skip commercials when restarting and that it appears they have to get networks to agree to signing up for it and probably why no Rogers-owned channels are includes (for now).

This leaves me with interesting questions...

Where in the chain is the recording done and how is it technically implemented?

If those select channels were to be recorded locally, wouldn't that put both a performance and longevity hit on subscribers' equipment?

nothanksrogers, I believe this works by having Bell record the channel at the head-end. This is technically a copyright violation, so Bell has to get permission from the copyright holder of each program on the channel. It sounds like some programs on a channel will be eligible for RESTART and others won't be.

Other features in Mediaroom version 2.5:
New user interface
  • Easier access to show information
While watching a show, simply press the down arrow to display the channel peek bar. You’ll instantly get the logo of the channel you are watching, the time left in the show and whether or not it is available for Restart.
  • Larger channel preview window
The new preview window makes it easier to see what’s playing on other channels without leaving the show you’re watching. Simply press the up or down arrow from the channel peek bar to browse channels.
  • See what’s playing next
Get the title and poster art of the four upcoming shows by pressing the right arrow from the channel peek bar. To view what’s playing beyond that, you can use the on-screen guide by pressing guide on your remote.
  • Quickly access previous channels
The last viewed channels mosaic displays the poster art of the last five channels you’ve selected and even lets you see live programming from each of these channels from a single screen. Simply press last on your Fibe TV remote to call up the mosaic and then select a poster to quickly return to that channel.
  • Faster access to the main menu
Our redesigned main menu boasts a sleek new look and can now be accessed from anywhere in Fibe TV without ever leaving the screen you are on by pressing menu on your remote. We’ve also made it easier to get to what you want in the main menu with friendly icon-based navigation.
  • Visual search results
Search results are displayed by poster art and conveniently sorted by type.

I suspect it is just a new link to ON DEMAND except it will be available as soon as the program starts to play.
Exactly. It's just a hack to allow easy access to VOD material. All the usual VOD "features" are there, like limited selection and inability to skip ads.

Has anyboby had this new 2.5 version automatically installed today (official start of rollout is beginning today till end of March). I'm from Ottawa and still on version 2.4... even after a reboot. Wondering if the new version will give the option of setting between ascending or descending on TV GUIDE.

Reboot won't typically trip it, they do areas based on nodes.
When your group is selected, then you'll get it.

RESTART is different from VOD. VOD content is provided by the Canadian channel about 24 hours after the program has aired and usually has different ad content than the live program. The VOD license can last as long as the beginning of the next season in some cases. The rules as to whether the program can be fast-forwarded are controlled by the channel, not by Bell. There used to be some variation in the rules for different programs and different channels, but lately all the VOD programs I've seen don't permit fast-forwarding.

RESTART programs are cached by Bell on their Fibe TV servers and have the same ad content as the live show. Their license is only long enough to allow you to watch the program that you have restarted while the program was being broadcast. For example, if you restart a one-hour program, that license will expire one hour after the end of the program's live broadcast.

Is this Restart feature available to all subscribers no matter what hardware you have? Also, how do I look up my current mediaroom version? Thanks

The RESTART feature should be available on all hardware since the "smarts" is all at the head-end, and your local hardware is just playing the video that it gets.
