FIBA World Championship (Basketball)

With the 2010 basketball World Championship tournament coming up I went to the FIBA website to find out where I could watch it but could not find a list of channels for each country. The only thing that came up was 'FIBA TV'.

I'm guessing that's an online channel but who knows whether it is free or not?

A quick search at various Canadian sports channels turns up nothing even though the tournament is less than a month away and a Canadian team will be present.

Anyone know if it on Canadian TV? I don't recall it getting much coverage in the past.

I believe (don't hold me to this) that ESPN and NBA TV hold US rights. I believe that for Canada The Score broadcasts any Canadian games and Raptors TV will likely get the rest. There is no reason that Raptors TV shouldn't cover it.

As I'm writing this I just found ESPN's schedule, some of these are on ESPN2, not that it matters for Canadian viewers

8/28, 11:00pm - Croatia vs. United States (tape delay)
8/29, 9:30am - United States vs. Slovenia
8/30, 2:30pm - Brazil vs. United States
9/1, 12:00pm - United States vs. Iran
9/2, 9:30am - Tunisia vs. United States
9/6, 11:00am - Round of 16
9/9, 11:00am - Quarter Final
9/12, 2:30pm - Championship Game

I'll do some looking for NBA TV's schedule. If The Score doesn't make an announcement about their coverage soon, then I'm planning on emailing them about this, Serie A and college football.

In the last couple of days I've heard numerous conversations on the FAN 590 about this event including a Bob McCown interview with Leo Rautins but no mention of how we could watch the games. It's kind of weird that basketball is the second or third most popular sport in the world yet its 'world cup' gets so little attention.

The fact that all of the big US players (Kobe, Lebron, Bosh, Wade) won't be there doesn't help it, especially in North America. Because of that I'd say Olympic basketball is that sport's version of the football World Cup, where the World Championship is much more comparable to hockey's World Championship.

TSN2’s coverage will feature all Team Canada games along with the playoffs and finals. Coverage begins on Saturday, Aug. 28 with Canada vs. Lebanon at 11:30 a.m. ET live from Turkey.

Saturday, Aug. 28 – Canada vs. Lebanon at 11:30 a.m. ET
Sunday, Aug. 29 – Canada vs. Lithuania at 9 a.m. ET
Tuesday, Aug. 31 – Canada vs. France at 11:30 a.m. ET
Wednesday, Sept. 1 – Canada vs. New Zealand at 9 a.m. ET
Thursday, Sept. 2 – Canada vs. Spain at 9 a.m. ET

TSN2 is the exclusive broadcaster in Canada.

TSN2 will also be the Canadian broadcaster for the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women, 2011 FIBA Americas Championship, and the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship for women.

Good to see more Team Canada basketball games on TV. Now if we could only get a broadcaster for the Canadian baseball team I'd be happy.

Aside from the World Classic, the Canadian baseball team consists solely of amateurs and minor leaguers. There would be almost no interest in any of its games and wouldn't be worth the cost of producing the games in the first place.

wow so we are only getting Canada's games along with the semis and finals, talk about being an insular nation. Surely there has to be an audience for the US games that is interested, and hey Greece is playing Turkey, there is always a chance that you will see chairs being tossed around and possibly the arena being set on fire

I had thought that Raptors TV would pick up some games, but it doesn't appear that will be the case. I have emailed them to confirm this and I'll let everyone know what they send back.

so the final game is nowhere to be found live on Canadian tv!!! TSN 2 is carrying an NFL game and Raptors TV is showing the 2002 NBA slam dunk contest!!!! oh wow and I thought curling instead of Champions League soccer on TSN in previous made us look provincial, but this takes the cake.

How does airing football over basketball make them look bad? Football gets 2x the ratings, if not more.

In the same way, curling gets 2-3x the ratings that soccer gets. Canada will always be a country where hockey, football (NFL and CFL), curling and baseball rule. Every other sport will always be second tier because the ratings just aren't anywhere near as good. The exception is "big events" like the Olympics and World Cup.

We need a TSN3 or at least TSN3.com like ESPN3.com. With all the horse-trading TSN and Sportsnet have been doing recently, they could have moved it to Sportsnet.

Sportsnet wouldn't take the game as they have the late NFL games at 4:15. Hell, they wont even show the Jays at 1 because they are afraid of an overrun.

And I agree with Josh, TSN2 won't put an international basketball game on that might get 30,000 viewers over the NFL even if they had the option in their contract.

FIBA final will air @ 1800 on TSN2

Good point about the NFL on Sportsnet. I didn't realize the basketball tipped-off so late (9:30 pm local).
