The demand for optical media and players is declining rapidly. There isn't much money in optical players anymore and that could impact R&D and player quality. Wouldn't be surprised if some companies and studios stopped making optical products soon.
I recently picked up a Sony 4K player for about 1/3 off. I was surprised at their absence but don't care about the missing apps since it's for playing discs only. Wouldn't have bothered buying it if it weren't for a few high definition audio discs and another household member that still likes to play DVDs. The player it replaced has no HDMI and the new TV has no component inputs.
