Glad to see someone has come to their senses. We should be doing the same thing here. OEMs gouge us for accessories when they provide proprietary charging connectors.

Also, people tend to throw these things out, and then we end up with more pollution and items in the landfill. To me, this is a no-brainer.

Using USB for all connections, data and power, is pretty much a no brainer. Next up should be protocol standards so that commonly available software can be used to access data such as email and pictures. It's pretty sad that things like working cell phones must be trashed due to failure of a proprietary power adapter that cannot be replaced. Then there are the excessive charges by some carriers for accessing photos and personal data on a cell phone. In all things, standards benefit consumers.
