Radio station Magic 99, call letters CHMC-FM, in Edmonton is gone today, replaced by Up! 99.3 FM.
The Rawlco owned radio station which began in 2005 as a smooth Jazz station, appealing to Adults 25-54, has switched to a soft pop/rock format.
The move came after an August 31st broadcasting decision by the CRTC which allowed Rawlco to forego the conditions of licence related to the station’s operation under a Smooth Jazz specialty music format.
Rawlco, which also owns Edmonton's CKNO-FM adult contemporary radio station, had made the request to the federal regulator last December saying that the company had "suffered significant financial losses". The station said the Smooth Jazz format was no longer viable in Edmonton and proposed to provide instead a middle-of-the-road format which would include compatible music from other genres while mixing in Smooth Jazz music.
Under the new format, up! 99.3 FM will play songs by artists such as Rod Stewart, Supertramp, Tears for Fears, Santana, Madonna, The Beatles, Sheryl Crow, Fleetwood Mac and Earth Wind and Fire.
