has anyone else had huge problems with getting eastlinks wireless highspeed? it took 6.5 months to get an appt......only to be told "no signal"! now they say theyre coming back to check for a signal on a pole installation.....but cant tell me when?! from talking to people in my community....over 90% of the homes wont be able to connect...even with a 40ft pole planted in the yard, and theres no sign of any repeater towers sprouting up. it almost seems like "high speed internet, for all of rural ns" actually meant something quite different.

It's a scam so they can meet their contract with the government and have us the taxpayers pay for their infrastructure. We were hooked up over a month ago..... it works for about 2 min at a time before the connection drops and we're getting dial up speeds. Called more times than I can count to get it fixed, they don't care. What a scam.

Hey, I install Eastlink wireless. To answer some of your questions, the installer has to measure the signal before he can install. The signal is measured in negative decibels -dbs. The installer has to have a score of -77dbs or less to be able to install. The lower the number the better the signal. The best I have seen was -37dbs (really close to the tower). The installer starts at the sides of the home and if the signal is not good enough then with your permission he would try the roof. If the roof is not good enough then he is finished. All of the information collected by the installer goes back to Eastlink. They are suppose to contact you and work out a solution such as a pole. Is it a perfect system? NO! Could they have done better with our tax money? Yes! But we are stuck with.

NW COVE, I agree there are entire areas that the service is not good enough to install. Eastlink needs to fix this so everyone can have it.

barrington, If you are only getting service for 2 min and then the signal drops or you speed is really slow then you need to have someone come and fix it. Call and keep calling until someone listens to you. I would have to guess that whoever installed your system messed something up. Most of the installs I do have been getting speeds of 3Mbps. I know it sucks when you look forward to having something, it doesn't work right and nobody seems to care.

I am living in the Barrington area as well and some days i get 2mbps and others like today i get .80mbps with a 5-50% packet loss. Ive called to complain multiple times and they have did nothing they just get me to do a speed test again which fluctuates constantly up and down while doing the test. I told them about the packet loss and they got me to do a ping command on google.ca with one packet lol anyways this eastlink wireless is bullshit im gonna start calling everyday now.

I've got to say I'm kind of surprised. I come and install it. I never see the customer again. I can't believe how many problems you guys are having. 2Mbps is a great speed, Eastlink is advertising 1.5Mbps. The signal should be more stable. 50% packet loss is a lot. I really hope they get this fixed up for you guys. I also hope more people jump in a say if its working good for them or not. I'm wondering if only the folks having problems are here looking for solutions and the people that its working good for are just off surfing without a care in the world. Thats why I did the search and found this thread I was wondering how people were getting on with it.

Later.

The reason you never see the customers again is because eastlinks customer support is **** at best. I have called 5 times since i have had it installed and they do nothing and every time i have to stay on hold for at least an hour. Most people would just give up and put up with the slow speeds and packet loss. If they dont start revolving issues with there customers I am going to take this to a higher level because to be honest I want my money back. This is a scam very unhappy with Eastlink and don't wanna deal with there BS anymore.

eastlink wireless

the connection was put to the test last night......dense fog, very heavy rain and lightning......2 laptops streaming youtube videos and xbox live gaming simultaneously. no problems, no buffering, no stuttering. it was still a very frustrating experience to get it hooked up, but it seems to work well so far. i do feel bad for u guys in barrington......there has to be a problem with eastlinks tower/equipment.

r2bz: NO, The reason I never see customers again is that I am an installer contracted by Eastlink. I have nothing to do with customer support. I don't even work for Eastlink. If you are looking for a whipping boy you found the wrong guy. I really don't care how long you are on hold for. I was here to see if I could help some people get the most out of their connection, maybe trouble shoot some issues with them. You know be a nice guy. Not listen to some one whine about being on hold. You can complain about Eastlink all you want, but don't tell me why I never see customers again when you have no idea what I do or what you are talking about. I was guessing that the reason your signal is dropping was because your antenna was pointed out toward the water and the signal is bouncing all over the place. I was hoping that some other people from Barrington might jump in and say they were having the same problem. If you are frustrated with Eastlink don't take it out on me.

Calm down Zombie didn't appear like he was blaming you. I feel his frustration. Signal is still dropping (every few min it seems) speeds are lower than dial up. Probably called 10-12 times... 30 min plus hold times. Last time I called, got a supervisor, she placed me on hold and I hung up after 30 more min. Sent 4 or 5 webforms, never get anything back other than your "email is important to us".

Eastlink is completely ignoring the situation..... any suggestions anyone?

Eastlink Pole/Antenna

My first post seems to have been rejected?

We've had the pole/antenna on our front lawn for a few weeks, and were hooked up last week.

Other than a sagging line to the house which will be replaced in weeks or months when they restock their heavier wire, not being able to access broadband during heavy rain, and occasionally being booted off in good weather, there are no major complaints from this location.

Anything beats dial-up, even though I've kept it for backup. This winter will be the true test.

Eastlink are playing catch up and the contractors are doing the best they can. Thanks Zombie for your input.

zombie, im kinda curious about your thoughts on the wireless signal bouncing off open water? i have a 12km shot to the tower, 2km of that is through very thick forest and then its a clear shot ....10km....over open ocean. (keeping my fingers crossed) but no problems whatsoever, even in bad weather.

the slowdown has happened :(

well it has happened..........last night in perfect weather, both download and upload speeds were down to exactly half of what they were everyday since the install. wonder if this is something eastlink does, or something else?

I gotta say that you guys really got ripped off with your rural Eastlink contract. Here in PEI the government made a rural Internet deal with Bell/Aliant instead, and they have brought wired DSL to all rural areas, not this wireless over-the-air crap that you guys are dealing with.

I've had that type of Internet before (through a local provider before Aliant) and the ping and speeds always fluctuate, there's not much you can do about it. The connection stability got so bad for us that we just dropped the service and went back to dial-up, which was much less expensive and much more stable.

Aliant has been more than amazing in fulfilling their promise on PEI... pretty much every household (minus a few really isolated ones) has been given 1.5 mbps hardwired, and many rural areas even get up to 7 mbps (that's what we have and we're 5 miles outside of Tignish, which is itself a rural town). Our ping is about 10ms constant, which is great for gaming... it's amazing.
