Strange Shaw Direct Receiver Behaviour

A few days ago, I installed a pi-hole (https://pi-hole.net/) in an effort to off-load the job of ad blocking from my individual devices browsers (via extensions) and replace it with 'one-stop shopping'. As this is an experiment at this point I'm running it on my personal server (under Mint 19) for the time being but if it works well I'll eventually bite the bullet and put it on a dedicated Raspberry Pi.

My question/concern is that a LOT of the traffic I'm seeing in the logs is my DSR600 constantly contacting Google - it does this approximately every 7 seconds! It's also trying to contact svc1.cdn.shawcable.net but that, at least, makes some sense. My PVR630 does not appear to be doing this.

Any ideas? I can't blacklist google without having to deal with angry family members... as much as I'd like to do just that some days! ;)

I have a DSR600 with Shaw Direct. I do not have it connected by wire or wi-fi to my router. Is the 600 actually using my wi-fi unbeknownst to me?

The 600 series (DSR600 and PVR630) do not have wi-fi capability which is why I had to run ethernet cable for mine. The newer 800 series do have wi-fi.

@CodyG102 - I asked our testing teams about your google pings from the receiver and received the following reply:

On the 6xx, the DSR background pings the CDN to keep the internet connected status up-to-date in the notification bar and menus. If the CDN does not respond to a ping, it falls back to a ping to Google.

Do you know if you'd be blocking the pings to our CDN, causing the receiver to ping Google instead? FYI, the 8XXs were improved to only ping when certain screens are accessed.

@k801809 If you note my original posting (https://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/11-shaw-direct-satellite/141927-dsr600-discussions-thread-11.html#post3076781) I noticed this activity AFTER I installed a "pi-hole" (ad/tracking blocker which uses a local DNS to filter out the undesirable traffic). I questioned why, when the device blocked inquiries to svc1.cdn.shawcable.net it began pinging google.

I appreciate your answer - which does explain the behaviour I observed - but, frankly, I think the frequency it was being done at is absolutely absurd. I can think of no practical reason this would need to be done every 7 seconds! Anyway, mystery solved...

This morning (April 24) at 2AM Eastern my DSR600 started a 1 hour download of the new update. I have the receiver ON all of the time and connected to a little audio FM transmitter that feeds my bedroom radio. I was surprised when I turned on the clock radio at 2AM - dead air, but at 3PM back in business. I was surprised to learn that I did not need to turn OFF the receiver to enable a download. Also surprised it took an hour to do so.

Wish List for DSR600 software update

I would like my DSR600 be able to use the guide to set multiple repeating guide timers like my DVR630.

I have lots of manual timers set on my DSR600 that are tedious to program and of course being manual timers are not sensitive to changes of programs. Also changing to and from DST is a pain with the manual timers.

I do not record from the 600 like I do from my OTA recorder or my DSR630. I use the timers to change channels during late night and early morning going from one news program to another and of course channel 833 which is BBC "World Report" carried on PBS Radio.

Please.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but based on other posts I don't think the 600/605 will get any new functional updates. And on another bit of bad news, come the end of the MPEG4 and HD conversion process all those American Radio stations will be dropped including 833 PBS Radio.

600 goes off and on

Motorola 600 - As I press the ON button, the green led light on front panel comes on and then goes out.

Suggestions?

If the on/off function still works and only the LED is wacky, I would live with it.

If it really bothers you and it is under warranty then you may get Shaw Direct to replace it with a refurbished unit, but you would have to pay for shipping – maybe around $15.

Why do you think the American radio channels will be dropped?
