...has anyone heard if the Droid X is making it's way to Canada this summer, and more specifically to Telus? I was going to get the Milestone in a couple of weeks, but if Droid X is coming, I'll definetely hold off...

New Droids

I too was about to take the plunge and get my first smart-phone. I was ready to go get the Milestone, but came across several references to new Motorola handsets. There's the Droid X, which I hear is not about to be released in Canada anytime soon. Then there's the Droid 2, or Milestone 2 which is very similar to the current Milestone except for an updated keyboard (no D-pad, larger keys), new processor and so on. I've also seen references to a XT720 (8 megapixel camera, records 720P HD video).

So for now, I'm on hold. Not about to fork over $149 for a unit that's about to be replaced with something better.

But isn't this always the case with technology. Everything is replaced with something better soon afterwards.

I don't disagree with that, it's just knowing a replacement exists but has not been officially released. It appears that it is tantalizingly close to being released. How long it takes to make its way to Canada is another matter.

@TKG26. Just curious, where did you hear of an August release?

Sorry i never meant to say a Canadian release in August. I meant an August release period. And wondered if Canada ever gets things on first release? Obviously never. :(

If you are willing to pay for the phone outright, you may be able to get a telus compatible or unlocked one (and choose whatever company you want) upon release from the states.

p.s. I LOVE MY MILESTONE!!!

...thanks all. I guess if you keep waiting for the latest and greatest, you'll forever be empty handed. I definetely want to get an android phone, and the Milestone continues to draw my eye, even though it seems pricey at 149 for a three year deal. As soon as I'm certain it's gonna get the 2.2 update, I'll grab it!

Ah, but Telus won't let me have the new activation price until July 12th anyway. That's my "6 months till end of 3 year contract" day! Cell-e-brate!!

Milestone XT720 vs Droid X

Hi all, I'd also like to point out that Milestone seems to be the series that Canada gets. So, assuming that I'd assume we'd get the XT720.

To be honest, I think I like the XT720 better. I've been looking at both of them and I just can't get over the xenon flash! If the Canadian release of this phone doesn't have the xenon flash, you can bet your beavers I'll be importing mine from the UK. The current specs from the Motorola UK site seem to suggest compatibility with Telus' network.

Can someone confirm plz? Link

NETWORKS:
WCDMA 1700/2100,
GSM 850/900/1800/1900,
HSDPA 10.2Mbps (Category 9/10)/7.2Mbps (Category 7/8),
EDGE Class 12,
GPRS Class 12,
HSUPA 5.76Mbps

Edit: I take it back... Telus' WCDMA seems to operate at the 1900 freq. Damn. Still, I'm betting on the XT720. :)

That phone is not Telus compatible, it's 2100MHz on HSPA. Telus uses 850/1900. None of the Canadian providers use 2100 at the moment. That phone would work with Rogers 2G network because it supports GSM 850/1900, but Telus doesn't have a 2G GSM fallback.

The XT720 is AWS compatible (thus Wind, Mobilicity, Shaw or Videotron) but it seems more likely that the Motorola phone Wind will be carrying is the Charm. That's pure speculation, but as Wind doesn't subsidize handsets carrying a high-end phone like that would require them charging a lot and would be unlikely to sell well.

The Droid X and Droid 2 are both CDMA phones so it's unlikely they will ever come to Canada as is. The "Droid" brand (separate from Android) is also a Verizon trademark, so it would have to be renamed like the Milestone. A Milestone X or Milestone 2 is certainly possible, but it would require a new radio and no such plans have been announced yet. That's not to say it won't happen though, the Milestone did take a while following the first Droid.

In the meantime if you're looking for a high-end Android phone on Telus check out the HTC Desire, a very well-reviewed high-end Android phone which Canada got before any American providers.
