I've been thinking about getting a Kobo. However, I don't know if they come with any sort of cover. I really don't feel like paying almost $30 for a Roots cover, but I suspect the Kobo will need some sort of protection.

Have a look around and you'll find something:

I picked up a nice sleeve for my reader at one of the Chapters stores.
Cost me like $12 total.

Cheers.

You really don't need a cover.

I bought one of the $30 covers when I bought the Kobo. It's nice to have if you're travelling but really doesn't fit well with the reader sliding out and one of the holder elastics actually covers the power switch. Nice to look at but not really practical.
