Now that I am happy with my OTA reception and receiving all the available channels for my area, I am moving to my next project to improve my wi-fi

can the bowties array or SBGH or DBGH be adapted for 2.4 GHz wifi?

how about the balun? can the 300 to 75 ohm balun be used?

Could you provide me with a few leads

Simple Wifi Antenna

I made this simple wifi antenna based on the wavelength of the 2450mhz frequency.

According to 4nec2X it can get up to 3.57 dB and as low as -15 dBi.

I'm not sure why exactly sure how I can have negative dBis, but I do.

So, I'm probably gonna add this onto my old wifi adaptor and see what happens.

Also, sorry about posting it in this forum, its just the best place I could think of doing this.

So, comments? Opinions

Why waste your time on a measley 3.57 dbi ? That only a bit better than a cheap rubber ducky antenna. With a Bi-Quad, about as easy a build as you can get, you get 10+ dbi. And the radiation pattern is balloon like, horizontally and vertically, so its very easy to aim. (you could actually mount it at any angle thats handy)

My older build of it:

I have since built a better one with the lips, and tweaked it out with Netstumbler (free windows program, but nothing like it in linux) in real time. Tweaking in real time is a real necessity with 2+ Ghz, because even blowing on it changes things, heh.

Im now considering building a 18dbi 3D corner reflector antenna from here :

Of course, if I wanted some real gain of 24+ dbi, I could put my bi quad in front of the large Dish TV network parabola I found along side the road, heh. On the other hand, I get a constant full 5 bars now with the bi quad, at -48 to -50 dbm and can pick up a couple of the neighbors wifi's at over 800 ft, heh.

I dont know what connector your WiFi card is using, but all mine use reverse SMA. Cheapest price I found here : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833998053

Its RG-58U cable, so not quite the ultra lowest loss cable out there despite their claims, heh.

Looks great! But the problem is it's not omni directional. I have seen those before, and you know what, I will look more into them.

Hmm, I actually really liking that last one, RamKat. Just wondering, can I use something cheap like... err... tin foil instead of all that expensive copper?

Also, RamKat, I was just installing that antenna in the attic today. Don't worry, I'm slow but, I'm getting it done. ;)

Hmm, so youre looking for antenna for the wireless router itself, for roaming around with a laptop ? If so, you probably want a larger vertical rubber ducky like this one :

One of the best things I did for my wifi setup was to move the location of where the router was originally located, even though it involved 50 ft of cat 6 and 50 ft of RG6. (I have a FIOS setup)
Keep in mind, with a carefully planned directional antenna setup, you can make it harder for others to pick up your signal. (security concerns, heh)

Not a bad price, but I think I'll check out something-bay. I was looking at one it was 3.50 for 12 dBi. I'm sure it's a little higher rated than it's actual power LOL, but we'll see.

Ok, so maybe for omni-directionality, buying is the best solution, unless someone has any other tips.

Now, could anyone recommend a solution for super point to point, as everyone seems to know lots about this, roaming around town (by town I mean a few km2 of fields). I was looking at a few yagis, but couldn't find any comparable DIY projects. You know what, scratch that. What is truly the best way to do directional (as in house roof too house roof, or just house roof to a focused area in town you are a lot like a coffee place).

What do you guys use?

Also, sorry if there are topics for this, I couldn't find anything really related to this, but anyone is welcome to point me in the right direction. :D

As I noted above (look for some links, I think the world record is a few hundred miles, with legal equipment). An old dish (relatively smallish dish) with a bi quad (or some similar high gain feed point antenna) is pretty awesome.
Ok, so maybe for omni-directionality, buying is the best solution, unless someone has any other tips.
Yeah, the cost of the connectors, unless buying in 10,000's, will kill us.

Yeah, I was looking at some of those biquads, they look great. Now, I have a 33" dish with a busted arm, and I know you can use dishes to create something super directional. Now, I can easily attach a rod to the dish to fix the arm, but when aiming the dish vertically, how can I know what angle the signal heading towards?

Coffee can and Pringles can wifi antennas have been around for years and achieve very good results. Other people have used modified satellite dishes. Five miles distance or more is quite common and it has been used to extend internet access to unserved areas by many people. There was an annual contest to see who could get the longest range with a standard, unamplified signal. They were up to about 20 miles the last I read.

My WiFi Antennas - work very well
