Is there any way to disable those Rogers help programs? I tried disabling them but they return regardless. This can't be normal?

The programs specifically are RogersUpdateManager.exe and RogersSelfHelpService.exe.

Do I need these running or are they essential?

Do you need the Rogers software? I say uninstall them. If you need anti-virus and spyware, try Microsoft Security Essentials or AVG Free.

I agree with Hugh. Uninstall them. I never install anything of Rogers. To me, its just more bloated software to hog resources like Norton.

Hugh gave some good suggestions for system protection, I would like to add, if your willing to pay, Vipre. They have an awesome anti virus program, very light, doesn't slow down my systems, even laptops that are OLD. They have a very good home licence for multiple PC's, that cost less than just one Norton licence. However, Vipre does check and install the virus definitions several times a day. (Which is a good thing)
