I just cancelled all of my Shaw services as I'm planning to go OTA.

I want to rewire my house with new RG6 coax (and have already bought a box of cable) but am wondering about the demarc. I'd like to have a place to put the wires in, but I don't want to have to worry about Shaw coming around and cutting my wires.

There's an electrical distributor not too far away here that has datacomm stuff, so I could just get my own box. What I'm wondering is if I put up my own box with my new house wiring will Shaw just deem it their own and lock me out of it?

The wire in the house is the property of the home owner.... not Shaw. If you want to use the existing wiring, ask Shaw to open up the box for you.

the only thing shaw cable is allowed to do, is disconnect the cable at the entrance point into your house from the little plastic box outside, like they did with one of my relative who lives north of toronto and was a former shaw cable customer.

In many homes the demarcation point is inside the home at the "electrical panel", where the one wire that comes into the home is then split in various directions for TV, broadband, etc. This depends on the home since sometimes some splitters can be in the "grey box" outside. The grey box belongs to the cable company and they can "cut" there, but, obviously cannot inside the home at the electrical panel.

I guess I must've asked in a roundabout way...

What I meant to ask is if I put my *own* box with my new cabling outside of my house next to Shaw's box will Shaw just come along and claim ownership of that new box and lock me out of it. There's not going to be any of Shaw's stuff in that box and all of the old coax will be removed.

I don't plan on using Shaw's box at all. I've just read stories on here where Shaw came around and cut/locked homeowners of it.

You may wish to call Shaw advising them of what you plan to do and perhaps ask them to remove their box (which they may not do hoping you or the next owner return to Shaw)

The instances of cut cables, etc (at the grey box) are usually when there's something more to the story than simply cancellation of service.

in the case of roger's they have their logo on the new boxes now, or atleast a sticker or tag on the cable identifying it belongs to Roger's. not sure of Shaw, but its likely they must have some kind of identification on theirs just as Bell has on their outside network interface boxes have.

Does Shaw require all the coax cables in the house to run into their own lockable demark box or can they all just run to a splitter accessible by the homeowner?

I know Shaw used to bill for each additional outlet over 4 and they did this by making the connections in their own box.

No on both counts. My Shaw service wasn't run from a demarc box, and I wouldn't consider an outdoor 4-way splitter installed by the technician 10' up to be "accessible by the homeowner".

So is that a no to allowing the homeowner to terminate 4 runs at their own splitter in the garage?

I see plenty of media panels where coax is terminated within, but I recall a new construction home with a sticker on the Shaw box requesting the homeowner to have everything terminated in that.

I suppose checking with Shaw would be the best bet.

Years ago with a local small cable company one of the techs was vicious and after he came onto the property and opened the box without any reason I basically told him to shove off and get off my property. When I cancelled cable they said they needed access and I told them no way. They suggested they would have to climb the pole. I said go for it as I wasn't stealing anything but I was using the entry for Shaw Direct.
Anyway Shaw took over and they are a completely different animal now. I have their service and the rv plan for Shaw Direct and the tech upgraded the box on the outside to a roomier more modern setup and left all access up to me. In some parts of the country they have become customer oriented to some degree.

Even Telus, when I switched to their DSl, upgraded the gear in the box and ran separate phone/internet, even though I am using voip.ms phone service.
Dealing with reasonable people can be fun.
