It should show you on the front display, however, you also need to be connected correctly and have the device sending the signal (BD Player?) properly configured to send bitstream to the AVR. See the following thread - read the part near the end on HD/HDMI audio.
If you have an older PS3 (not the slim model), then it cannot bitstream HD audio to the AVR via HDMI, so you need to set it to send PCM and then the AVR will indicate Multi-channel PCM on the front. If there is no such indication, in the AVR's user menu there is usually an info option which shows you the incoming signal.
Also, on the PS3 the "display" button will indicate what's happening in the PS3.
