I have an xbox with HDMI out to my Yamaha receiver, which handles switching all inputs to my tv also through HDMI. The xbox is set to 5.1 DD under the system settings, but it seems to keep falling back to 2 channel (shows linear PCM on the Yamaha at that point), and I haven't been able to track down why it does. It does seem to stay that way across reboots of the xbox once it does. However, if I go to the audio settings, pick 2 channel, back out and then back in and select 5.1 again it starts working fine once more. Anyone else see a similar problem ever? Maybe a problem in HDMI handshaking if the receiver and/or tv aren't ready when the xbox comes on? The xbox won't even boot up until the receiver and tv are on but instead just sits there spinning waiting for the HDMI path to be set up apparently. A friend of mine has a similar setup with a yamaha but a sharp hdtv and hasn't had any problems, playing the same games even.

Had the same problem on a Denon AVR-3310 as well. With HDMI the 360 attempts to determine the capability of the connected device for both video and audio. The HDMI handshake is a fairly normal process that often seems to go screwy on the video resolution side but it is unusual for it to happen, in my experience, with audio. There's not much you can do about it ... it's a 360 issue.

Well, an issue between the 360 and your receiver anyway. There is some combination of things I can do that screw up the HDMI handshake between my processor and 360 as well (I think if I turn on the 360 but the TV is using a different input) and it will default to two channel.

Thanks anyway. Wouldn't be so annoying if it didn't appear to 'stick' that way even across reboots, and I still haven't determined the exact sequence that causes it yet. The LG tv takes a bit to fire up, so it might be when the first thing I do from an 'all devices off' state is pick the 360 activity on my remote.

I have my 360 feeding my Onkyo 806 into my Sony 60EX500......does the exact same thing you experience on a regular basis. I've tried all kinds of different configs with power up orders on my Harmony, delays, etc. and it has never stopped it. Sometimes it will work fine for days and sometimes it will do it every boot session. It's an issue with the 360 with how it boots.

I have the same issue if I turn on the receiver and the XBox at the same time. If I let it do a handshake with the PVR first then switch to the XBox input then turn on the XBox it's always in 5.1
