In a broadcasting decision handed down yesterday, the CRTC 2011-599 has approved an application by Stingray Digital application for a broadcasting licence to operate Concert TV.
The station would be a national Category 2 specialty programming undertaking that would be devoted to current and historical music concerts from a wide variety of music genres and related programming. Programming on the station would be 75% English and 25% French.
Category 2 channels are stations licensed by the CRTC to broadcast within defined formats but are not guaranteed cable or satellite television carriage rights.
Stingray Digital is a privately held Canadian media and entertainment company based in Montreal, Quebec. Stingray Digital specializes in digital media including interactive music broadcasting and distribution and is best known for its Galaxie music service which can be found on most cable systems around the country.
Stingray also runs Concert.tv, a Video on Demand television service which the company says is currently available in close to 30 million North American Households.
The Commission did not receive any interventions in connection with this application
