I remember growing up in Thunder Bay Ontario and getting Videon Cable in 1970.

The Channel Lineup in 1970 was:

2 CKPR-CBC Thunder Bay
3 KDAL-CBS Duluth Minnesota
5 WLUC-CBS and ABC Marquette Michigan
6 WDSM-NBC Duluth Minnesota

I remember my parents paying $4.95 a month. Channel 5 was a write off it was barely visible.

I would also love to see a channel guide from way back in the early 1970s from Halifax Cablevision, the older name for Halifax Cable. I tried Google, but it wasn't much help in tracking such old information down.

I was living in rural central Newfoundland in 1989 when cable came to our village. Most rural areas of Newfoundland were served by N1 Cable in 1989, later Regional Cable, Persona, and most recently EastLink. The N1 lineup in 1989, as I remember it, was as follows:

2 CBS Detroit
3 ABC Detroit
4 NBC Detroit
5 PBS Detroit
6 CBC St. John's
7 NTV (Newfoundland TV)
8 CBC Newsworld
9 CITV Edmonton
10 Community Channel (I had fun helping to set up and work in the community channel)
11 CHCH Hamilton
12 ASN (Atlantic Satellite Network)
13 BCTV Vancouver

Most of the channels were supplied by Canadian Satellite Communications Ltd. (CANCOM).

Calgary and Southern Alberta, February 1988

Scan from the Calgary Herald TV Times, Feb. 26, 1988 showing the cable TV channels available in Calgary. Also lists broadcast station and transmitter numbers for southern Alberta.

I believe the North/South reference in the cable channel listings goes back to when Shaw and Rogers covered different areas of the city before they did the 1994 territory swap.

I believe that in 1988 the name Showcase referred to the Western Canada Pay TV movie channel.

The Feb. 26 TV Times shows them playing a bunch of movies throughout the week including,

Light of Day
The Good Wife
Opposing Force
Tough Guys
Crocodile Dundee
Critical Condition
Ruthless People
etc.

My fuzzy memory seems to be that what was called Showcase in the 1980's was one of the two pay channels that launched circa 1983. The other one evaporated very quickly.

Have to see what else I can find amongst the strange stuff I keep.

In 1983, FirstChoice launched nationally and SuperChannel launched in Alberta and Ontario. In early 1984 SuperChannel acquired World View (BC and Yukon) and a regional Pay TV channel in Saskatchewan. I believe they also became available in the Northwest Territories. In September 1984; both FirstChoice and SuperChannel co-branded their channels into one service. SuperChannel served Manitoba and west and FirstChoice served Ontario and East. The service was known as FirstChoice/SuperChannel. In 1989 the co-branding ended.

I've never heard of Showcase. I'd be interested to learn more about this channel.

You are correct, I was misreading the evening programming listings. The movies were on SuperChannel.

Here's a list of program titles for Showcase channel 18 in Calgary from the daytime listings for Friday, Feb 26 starting at 5 AM through Saturday morning at 4 AM. Based on the shows, it seems like you could call it CNN Canada.

I think Showcase was probably a channel very similar to Sample Channel in Ontario. It probably rotated programming between all the Pay Channels that were offered. Example one week it would show CNN and the next week it would show MuchMusic. This was likely a marketing tactic to get more people to subscribe to Pay TV services.

Possible, but I do remember being able to watch CNN programming back then.

Same lineup for Friday, Feb 12th and a quick sample of other days from the two TV Times I have at hand for February 1988. I'll see what other detritus I have around that might shed more light.

A few guesses on my part...

-I think CBC Parliamentary Television Network may have been on channel 36 from late 1984/Early 1985 to September 1988

-I think Chinavision may have been on channel 33 from launch in 1984 until September 1988

-Telelatino was likely on channel 30,31 or 32 from 1984-1988

-Headline News was likely on channel 28 from 1984-1988

I lived in Toronto in Feb 1983 and I recall Rogers having one dedicated channel that would use VIC-20 type graphics and display price comparisons of various grocery items at various store like Dominion, Loblaws and Nob Hill Farms. That may have been channel 14.
