Rogers Media this week announced it will launch CityNews Channel, a 24/7 English language news station, on Rogers Cable on October 3rd.
Much of the programming on CityNews Channel will be simulcasts of other CityTV shows. The channel will simulcast City TV's Breakfast Television, CityNews, CityNews at Five, CityNews at Six, and CityNews Tonight.
From Midnight to 5:30am, the station will simulcast live audio news feeds from 680News and visuals from the channel's 'Eyes of Toronto' cameras across the GTA.
When it’s not running simulcast shows, the station will be anchored by rotating hosts on an hourly basis and employ the same type of format as can be found on Rogers 680 News radio station with traffic and weather together on the :1s, sports at :15 and :45, and business at :26 and :56 past the hour.
In addition to competing against local news broadcasts, the station will compete for audience against Bell Media's local CP24 news station and National News channels such as CBC News Network, CTV News Channel, and Sun News.
Perhaps realizing the station would likely not survive as an over-the-air station which relies solely on advertising revenue, Rogers will launch the station as a digital cable specialty channel station whose primary source of revenue is monthly fees paid by cable subscribers.
The CityNews Channel will be available to Rogers Digital Cable customers in Ontario on channel #1 beginning October 3, 2011.
