RE: Instinct. A shame but i'm not surprised. About the only summer dramatic series that I have enjoyed this season. Good cast and intriguing whodunit stories but I suspect its running subplot about adopting a baby probably affected its ratings in the more conservative parts of the United States.

The gay couple aspect would not play well in many places either though I doubt that would be a big factor in large urban areas where most of the US population lives. I find that the whole family/significant other/son/daughter/adoption subplots written into many shows these days detracts from most, if not all, of them. If I want to watch that type of programming then I'll watch a family oriented drama. Writing such subplots into other types of shows is becoming more of a crutch for lazy writers and producers with limited budgets. It is symptomatic of a general decline in the quality of programming on network TV. The big production money and higher priced talent is being siphoned off to premium specialty channels and streaming services.

@ExDilbert: I think you've also missed another aspect of TV shows that either make them or break them. Namely: Family. The shows that have a family vibe do well. Those that do not usually fail no matter how good their stories and actors are. The audience expects a family structure. No matter how unorthodox, there always has to be father, mother or sibling role no matter how unorthodox the roles are. Season one of Star Trek Discovery failed to do that and the absence of that dynamic nearly sank the series. Season two did starting with Pike as dad, Saru older brother etc. It succeeded because we finally had a family. In the case of Instinct, I would say it was a case of a family too far. The audience was not ready for a gay couple that acted so naturally like a heterosexual one.
