If you saw the trailer for Catfish (go ahead, watch it!) you would likely be under the impression that this is some kind of suspense/horror movie. It isn't. It is one of the most misleading trailers I have ever seen. Some guy actually booed when the movie was over.

This is too bad, as Catfish is actually a well made documentary. It also would not likely be carried in theaters without the deceptive marketing.

So, you have been warned.

Catfish is a 2010 American documentary involving a man being filmed by his friends as he builds a romantic relationship on the social networking website Facebook with an attractive girl, and the mysterious results when they all go to visit her.

Saw that trailer about a month ago and really didn't know what to think. Read some reviews which totally gave away the premise/surprise. I might still check it out.

The filmmakers have also received some criticism with claims that it's staged and not a documentary. It all contributes to more publicity though, which can't be a bad thing for an independent film.

If one watches the trailer and then reads the Wikipedia article, or any article describing the movie, it's assumed these articles have included spoilers. Perhaps the trailer really is misleading.
