Canadians will no longer need to give 30-days notice to cancel TV, internet or phone service

Looks like another strike for the Big Three telcos.

The CRTC today announced that Canadians will no longer have to give their provider advance notice if they would like to cancel their television subscription service.

This is the first, of presumably many, decisions to come out of the CRTC’s “Let’s Talk TV” public hearings that took place in Ottawa earlier this fall. Many individuals as well as consumer groups had expressed their wish to see these policies eliminated.

In the same decision, the CRTC also passed the restriction against Internet and phone service providers, which used to require 30-days notice for cancellation of service.

By making these changes, the CRTC says it has “made it easier for individuals and small business customers to take advantage of a competitive marketplace by switching service providers.”

The commission had previously prohibited the 30-day cancellation policy for wireless services, a decision that took effect in December 2013.

The new regulations for TV, internet and phone service providers will come into effect as of January 23, 2015.
