Astral and Corus today announced the launch of HBO Canada which will launching on Thursday, October 30, 2008.

The channel will only be offered to customers that subscribe to The Movie Network or Movie Central. Canadians will not be able to subscribe to HBO Canada on its own.

With its launch in October, HBO Canada will be home series such as True Blood, Entourage, Big Love, Flight of the Conchords and In Treatment, airing day-and-date with HBO in the U.S. Astral and Corus say the service will also offer some other library titles and first-run HBO original films, comedy specials, documentaries, live concerts and sporting events which were previously unavailable in Canada, including Real Time with Bill Maher, Def Comedy Jam and Chris Rock: Kill the Messenger.

Library titles available on HBO Canada include such series as OZ and Da Ali G Show; original movies Gia, The Late Shift and If These Walls Could Talk; acclaimed miniseries From the Earth to the Moon and Angels in America; and comedy specials from the likes of Dane Cook, Tracey Ullman and Ellen Degeneres. HBO Canada will round out its offering with Canadian films and series including The Movie Network and Movie Central's award-winning original series such as Durham County and Terminal City.

HBO Canada will include a standard definition and high definition offering.

Shocking! I wonder why Astral and Corus can't offer those programs on their existing channels? This sounds a bit a like an appeasement to those that think we're missing something on the real HBO. I'm always a cynic. ;)

I believe this may be a workaround for some of the contracts that HBO has signed with some of it's suppliers and with Astral.

For example, Astral already gets a lot of series, movies etc from HBO. The contracts that HBO signed with some suppliers are probably exclusive - for example Bill Maher, some George Carlin stuff, etc. If the contract states "HBO exclusive", then this development would get around that contract and allow the material to be shown in Canada, by Astral (as HBO Canada), etc.

I hope that my conversations with my VP contact at Astral may have contributed in a small way to this development.

So does this mean that I am going to have to subscribe to 3 channels to get the same thing I was getting before? With Superchannel signing an exclusive deal with one of the studios, and now this. Sounds like my satellite bill will be ever increasing.

I wonder if they will have an on-demand channel as well or continue to use TMN On Demand. I really like being able to watch the HBO series now on demand and hopefully we won't lose that feature.

Yes 57, your communication with Astral as well as mine..... I too have been pushing for a lot of these shows to come to TMN. Especially Bill Maher.
I can't wait

Great news Hugh!!

Thanks

From press release

Launching on Thursday, October 30, 2008, HBO Canada is a multiplex channel that will be offered at no additional charge to customers who subscribe to The Movie Network or Movie Central.
On another note, about $%^&*( time.

If my provider carries the SD and HD channel then I probably have no reason to keep HBO. 30+ years of original programming from all genres should easily fill up the schedule.

It looks to me like this will be replacing MMORE and MMORE HD. I found a full length press release on Astrals website in PDF format which included this:

The Movie Network service includes 24-hour multiplex channels – M, MExcess, MFun!, MFest and the soon to be launched HBO Canada – which deliver diverse and entertaining programs in an uncut and commercial-free television environment. The Movie Network also offers The Movie Network HD and the soon to be launched HBO Canada HD, two dedicated high-definition channels providing hundreds of titles in HD; and The Movie Network OnDemand, a Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) service, available in select areas across eastern Canada.
...and, specific to the On Demand...

HBO Canada will include a standard definition and high definition offering. HBO Canada programming will also be offered on demand through The Movie Network OnDemand and Movie Central On Demand where available by service provider.
Also, a peek at the MMORE schedule on October 31st shows back-to-back episodes of HBO series running on that day.

MMORE has just been a repeat channel of the TMN1 feed for the most part, so it seems like a good re-branding in my opinion.

I assume that TMN will move all the HBO series off the main MHD channel, and onto this new one. That means that every carrier will have to offer it from day one, or they better anyway.

Very interesting. This may be enough to try subscribing to The Movie Network once again. Every few years I give it a go but cancel after a couple of months, dissapointed in what is shown. HBO's programming could really make this worthwhile.

This would seriously make me think about switching to cable so that i can get the ondemand service. save money by being able to watch some of the series ondemand rather than buying the dvd, watching them and then letting them collect dust because i missed a few episodes or didn't see one of the seasons.

At least this change will make better use of the MMore bandwidth. I primarily subscribe to TMN for the HBO series, since there really aren't a lot of good movies on the network. To be fair, there aren't a lot of good movies being produced, so it's not entirely TMN's fault.

I will be interested to see if the HBO stuff currently on Showcase get moved to HBO Canada.

Showcase is owned by CanWest. Unless their contracts are over with HBO, then I doubt anything will change in that regard.

Here is the release excluding the corporate info
TORONTO, Sept. 22 /CNW/ - Astral Media's (ACM.A/ACM.B) The Movie Network
(Eastern Canada) and Corus Entertainment's (CJR.B/CJR) Movie Central (Western
Canada) today announced the launch of HBO Canada, a channel that will deliver
a full slate of HBO's award-winning, boundary-pushing, genre-defining series,
films, comedies and live events. Launching on Thursday, October 30, 2008, HBO
Canada is a multiplex channel that will be offered at no additional charge to
customers who subscribe to The Movie Network or Movie Central.
"HBO is one of the most successful and sought-after entertainment brands
in the world and we are thrilled to be expanding upon our long-standing
relationship to launch this unique new service," said John Riley, President,
Astral Television Networks. "For years, HBO's dramatic programming has been
available on The Movie Network and Movie Central. But even with all of the HBO
titles we offered, Canadians still wanted more. They wanted the comedy series,
the live specials, the sporting events and the behind-the-scenes content that
went into the HBO viewing experience. In launching HBO Canada we will be in a
position to offer Canadians this additional content, together with the current
signature series that HBO produces, to create an entertainment and value
proposition that promises to set a new standard for premium television viewing
in Canada."
With its launch in October, HBO Canada will be home to new and returning
marquee series such as True Blood, Entourage, Big Love, Flight of the
Conchords and In Treatment, airing day-and-date with HBO in the U.S. The
service will also offer more than 200 hours of library titles and first-run
HBO original films, comedy specials, documentaries, live concerts and sporting
events which were previously unavailable in Canada, including Real Time with
Bill Maher, Def Comedy Jam and Chris Rock: Kill the Messenger. Library titles
available on HBO Canada include such series as OZ and Da Ali G Show; original
movies Gia, The Late Shift and If These Walls Could Talk; acclaimed miniseries
From the Earth to the Moon and Angels in America; and comedy specials from the
likes of Dane Cook, Tracey Ullman and Ellen Degeneres. HBO Canada will round
out its offering with Canadian films and series including The Movie Network
and Movie Central's award-winning original series such as Durham County and
Terminal City.
"We are thrilled that HBO Canada is going to be available to our
subscribers this fall," said Paul Robertson, President, Television, Corus
Entertainment. "Canadians see great value in HBO's distinctive brand and
compelling programming and we have responded to this with a channel that
offers a full complement of HBO programming that meets our audience's demand
for world-class entertainment - delivered in standard definition, high
definition and on demand."
HBO Canada will include a standard definition and high definition
offering. HBO Canada programming will also be offered on demand through The
Movie Network OnDemand and Movie Central On Demand where available by service
provider.
Astral Media and Corus Entertainment have expanded on the long-standing
programming output deal that each has with HBO in order to launch HBO Canada.
HBO will not hold an ownership stake in HBO Canada.
Frankly, I see little new here. A few new programs but essentially this is just putting all the current HBO stuff from TMN or MC and putting it on a separate channel.

I wouldn't be surprised as Kloraff suggested that this could mean the demise of MMORE HD.
