Residents of Winnipeg, Manitoba will have one of the most advanced digital hubs in North America this October.

The 28,000-square-foot facility, which will be located on the second floor of the Air Canada Centre on Portage Avenue, will also add 50 new jobs to the area.

“The Canadian Tire Advanced Cloud Computing Centre will serve as the core digital hub for...Canadian Tire Retail, Mark’s, FGL Sports, Partsource, Gas+ and our Financial Services division,” said Eugene Roman, Chief Technology Officer of Canadian Tire Corporation. “We’re entering the next phase of our digital journey and we’re excited that our journey puts the Winnipeg community front and centre.”

The new facility will be used to develop apps to improve digital shopping and customer service as well as boost back-end operations to accommodate widespread mobile use. The hub will have a digital content warehouse, application lab, testing lab and high performance data centre with 20-times more computing power and 10-times more network bandwidth than its existing technology infrastructure.

The province of Manitoba will be kicking in $1 million in grants and roughly $300,000 worth of incentives will come from the City of Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz adds: "The opening of the Canadian Tire data centre will create terrific opportunities in our technology sector and will significantly advance the digital media industry in Winnipeg. This announcement by one of Canada's top retailers also signals our success in making Winnipeg a city of choice for companies looking to make considerable investments."
