Activision Blizzard Inc. said it sold about 4.7 million copies of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" game worth $310 million in the first 24 hours in North America and the United Kingdom.

The first person shooter video game went on sale all over the world on Tuesday in the perhaps the most highly anticipated video game debut of the year.

Analysts are predicting that "Call of Duty", which is available for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, will go on to sell between 11 million and 13 million copies by the end of the year.

Modern Warfare 2, which was officially announced in February, picks up the same storyline as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. It s the sixth instalment in the Call of Duty series.

The game has received highly positive acclaim from professional reviewers, especially for console versions. Review aggregator Metacritic holds the average review of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game at 96% while the PC version is at 90%. Positive reviews cite a "compelling story mode, a slick package of mini missions and a multiplayer which is pretty much unparalleled in depth."
