Lately I have noticed that all my movies, both blu-ray and DVDs are now being displayed in letterbox format using my PS3 and my new Sony 40" LED 700 series tv.

The blu-ray menus are full 16:9 but as soon as the movie starts it shrinks. What gives??
I noticed this recently after a PS3 upgrade.

Anyone else have this issue?

The PS3 has always being excellent filling the screen with all movie formats in the past including DVDs.
The TV shows all rogers HD content full screen 16:9 so I don't think it is the TV.

I thought blu-rays where always supposed to be perfectly formatted to fit new 16:9 TVs.

The movie was a blu-ray of Shrek Forever After.

There are so many video settings on both the TV and PS3 I am going to check to see it something has changed. I'll try a few other movies.

Blu-Rays are going to be formatted to a film aspect ratio, which probably for the most part is not going to be 16:9, so you'll have the black bards on the majority of movies.
