It has now been over five years since cable telephony first launched in this country and the number of Canadians receiving cable telephone service from Canada's big four cable companies - Rogers, Shaw, Vidéotron and Cogeco - now tops 3.5 million.

Using numbers published in the respective company’s most recent financial results, Digital Home has calculated that the big four cable providers now have 3,547,003, up 18.2% from the same time in 2009 and up 46% from the same time in 2008.

Videotron and Rogers recent fiscal quarters ended September 30th while Cogeco and Shaw fiscal quarters ended August 31st so our numbers are not specific to one date but they still manage to convey the continuing strong demand for cable telephone service in Canada.

By comparing the same fiscal quarters for the last two years, Digital Home calculates the big four cable companies have added 547,578 digital telephone subscribers in the last year versus 569,993 in the year prior. That works out to more than 45,600 new subscribers a month for the big cable giants.

Since Cable telephony began rolling out in Canada in early 2005 until the end of 2009 Rogers and Videotron had been neck and neck jostling for the lead in terms of number of subscribers. In 2010, however, growth at Rogers slowed significantly while Shaw Cable has come up to challenge Videotron as the overall Cable phone leader.

As of September 30th, Quebec based Videotron had 1,098,100 cable telephone subscribers, an increase of 119,000 in the last year. In second spot was Alberta based Shaw with 1,096,306 subscribers, up 266,589 in the last twelve months. Ontario based Rogers added 86,000 subscribers during the year to 995,000. Cogeco, which operates in Ontario and Quebec, added 75,991 subscribers and now has 357,597 digital phone subscribers.

The following are the most recent cable telephone subscriber counts for the big four cable companies (All subscriber counts have been sourced from the respective company’s most recent financial statements):
  • Videotron - 1,098,100 (9/30/10)
  • Shaw - 1,096,306 (8/31/10)
  • Rogers- 995,000 (9/30/10)
