I was wondering what's the best cheap way to play 1080p mkv files on my sony bravia hdtv?

other than netbook/laptops/mac mini of course!

I built myself a little Intel Atom/Nvidia ION based "nettop" computer to playback 1080p mkvs, it works flawlessly and it's tiny!

Here's what I used...

- Zotac IONITX-A-U Motherboard (Integated Intel Atom N330 Dual Core and Nvidia ION graphics)
- 4GB of DDR2-1066 RAM (overkill would call this overkill, but I had it lying around)
- Mini-Box M350 Mini-ITX Case

I run Windows 7 on it and use Boxee as my media software.

If you're not looking for actual HTPC functionality then the Western Digital HDTV Live will work for that. Plus the latest does Netflix if that interests you.

It supports:

Subtitle - SRT, ASS, SSA, SUB, SMI

Does it *really* do Netflix in Canada? Has anyone tested it?

I've been looking for a player for Netflix, but most of the small streaming devices don't support Netflix Canada, except Apple TV.

how is the video quality on WDTV Live?

does the video buffer or become choppy since I'll be playing a 10 GB file, 1920x1080 (x264 @ 23.976fps), 8171kbps bitrate, DTS 1509kbps.

Does the box heat up too much?

anyone use popbox or boxee box or mvix ultio for .mkv files?

My Boxee does great for the few 1080p mkvs I've tried. As for the 720p mkvs, I'm having a buffering issue which seems to be known to the developers.
