They have to be crazy to price it more than an iPad.

Sure, it's arguably a better tablet, but if you're trying to steal the front runner's market share pricing it higher than them is not generally a good strategy.

UPDATE!

Engadget is now reporting that this may be just a placeholder and that the real price will be the previously reported $800. I guess we won't know till Thursday when it's actually released but it sure seems odd to post such a ridiculous price so close to launch. It'll only turn people off the product.

Leak a placeholder at $1200, then release it at $800, and everyone thinks it's so much cheaper than it "was going to be".

Even at $800, though, if the market leader has an entry point at $500, you have to have something mighty compelling (and I don't know that an inferior interface attached to a faster processor and an SD card slot could be considered "compelling) to sway people away from that leader (not to mention the iPad being the current "it" thing to have).

Can we start a poll? How many units (as a percentage of iPads) will the Xoom sell?
If the lowest price is $800, I say they don't get anywhere close to 10% of what the iPad will sell this year; probably less than 5%.

Yeah, I can't get my head around the minimum one month 3G service in order to activate the Wi-Fi. What's up with that? I'm going to reserve judgement on that until it's released and we know if that is actually a requirement.

*shakes head in disbelief*

Canadians will only be interested in the wifi version, at least initially. The CDMA version Verizon will carry won't work with Canadian carriers. Unless an HSPA version is released or Bell or Telus pick it up for their CDMA networks (unlikely) it will be wifi only in Canada no matter which version you have.

I heard rumours that it is coming to Rogers in late March, as Canadian providers are tired of losing out to customers going to the States to buy these devices. But I guess this would have to be a GSM version. Anyone have insight into that?
