Interesting development. I wonder how much of this is due to a fundamental change in Bell's thinking and how much is due to competition from cable internet services. Judging from recent events, there appears to be a large shift toward TSI cable internet, an unthrottled service. Maybe Bell has seen the writing on the wall and is responding to maintain wholesale market share.

I think Geist hit the nail on the head.

Perhaps (definitely not sure) because Bell retail clients have 6Mbps speed and the CRTC may require them to offer wholesales the same speeds offered retail speeds.

If Bell's statements were 100% correct, they would be eliminating throttling and data caps on their own retail services. There is no indication that they are doing so.

Another reason for the change might be political. It became obvious this year that the current federal government will not allow Bell to interfere with third party internet customers. (Whatever became of UBB anyway?) The most recent action by Bell removes another contentious issue from it's dealings with independent ISPs.

Bell is also wholesaling Fibe to independent ISPs so there is a move toward offering higher speeds through those channels. Again, I've got to wonder if Bell in simply doing so to prevent attrition due to higher speed third party cable internet offerings.

I REALLY wish people that read this stuff, could figure out the difference between "Bell" and "Bell Aliant".

They are NOT the same company and do things differently.

P.S. - Not your fault Hugh. Your just pumping out the news.

P.P.S. - I really wish Bell Aliant had stayed just Aliant and not jumped into the murky waters of Bell.

Hugh, sure it is and you understand the differences but soooooo.... many people think Bell Aliant = Bell. They read your news items and assume they are the same.

Bell has numbers of subsidiaries but Bell Aliant is not one of them. They (Bell Aliant) are their own company, trade different on the stock market with a different board of directors and a some what, different direction.

Bell owns the majority of shares of Bell Aliant and has the biggest voting rights when it comes to share holders but they do not move in the same direction.

FYI, If I write about Aliant, I always say Bell Aliant or Aliant.

Yes, there was word on the TSI forums a week or so ago - everyone will be getting a bump to 6 in the near future.

This is great news re: throttling.
If bell's in such a happy mood, how about compensating us for 3 years of unwarranted throttling? :p

The one thing that was interesting in the letter was this line "As a result, we recommend that you monitor your access to ensure that you can meet the needs of your customers"

I wonder if Bell hopes they have punted a political football to TPIAs.
