I am looking for a new 5.1 amplifier/receiver.

I came across the Harman Kardon AVR Series 5.1 A/V Receiver (AVR154)for $248.00

Have also been looking at the Onkyo TX-SR308, for 269.00.

I have a small living room. My speakers are average, about 100watts, and I will be plugging in a PS3 and going out to a 1080p television.

Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Here's an FAQ on AVR features that may be handy.

The Onkyo will decode the new HD audio formats, while the HK will not. I'm not sure if the HK will handle HDMI audio even, since the specs say "HDMI switching".

If it doesn't handle HDMI audio, that would be a significant difference. If it handles HDMI audio, then you could have the PS3 do the HD audio decoding and send out Multi-channel LPCM to the AVR via HDMI.

The Onkyo is also HDMI 1.4 (3D ready) if that matters.

Depending on your budget, the Denon 591 is on sale at FS right now.

I bought mine to replace an H/K, and although 2-ch stereo isn't as nice as with the H/K, surround is greatly improved. Having a full Audyssey package is also really nice, and I believe the Denon is the most affordable AVR that includes it.

FYI, I am using a fat PS3, and the AVR has no issues with HDMI video pass-through, and can handle the decoded D-THD and DTS-MA via PCM/multichannel.
