After ten years I can say that trolls are the bane of our existence hence why I enjoyed reading the following from here

I found the last two paragraphs particularly well written. (the italics are mine and succinctly state what we have been preaching for ten years)

Ars Technica is a large and vibrant community. Our readers are the best editors, commenters, friends, and debate partners we could ask for. But there is no denying that our community is battling a serious troll infestation. Trolls are childish commenters who deploy inflammatory and boorish antics to disrupt or drag off-topic what are otherwise interesting discussions. They never accept responsibility for their actions, choosing instead to blame everyone else. So we're taking action.

Effective immediately, we are adopting a hard line against blatant trolling in article discussions (this does not apply to the OpenForum generally). We are going to give trolls an immediate 24-hour timeout upon their first infraction—with no warning. Additionally, troll posts will be subject to deletion if judged egregious or made by a new account. (Experience tells us new accounts that troll are almost always sock puppets, and those that are kicking off a new account with trolling aren't welcome). What's an egregious troll? Any troll that personally attacks someone else in our community. If you're not bright enough to criticize ideas without personally criticizing individuals, we're not interested in having you around. If a user chooses to venture into the territory of trolling others, it is their fault and their fault alone for what happens to them next. We will not weep for trolls, nor will we feel any remorse.

This crackdown marks a major change for us, but it is one we are committed to. We will implement this new policy for a period of time, probably throughout the rest of 2011, and then have a community discussion about how well it is working. So, that's the "announcement" portion of my post; the rest is just context for those of you who are interested.

The requests for increased moderation come from all corners: people complain about Mac fans trolling Windows 8 threads, Windows users trolling iPad threads, and Android acolytes trolling yet others. The takeaway is that trolling is a universal problem and it isn't caused by one topic, one product, one writer, or any single item. Really, trolling is about one thing and one thing only: an individual's capacity for intelligent disagreement. There is only one person responsible for trolling, and that's the troll. There are no other excuses for it.

Anti-trolling efforts aren't about silencing discord or competing points of view, although the unimaginative troll will always claim that it is. Moderation is about creating a space for intelligent discussion, which includes dissent. But people are not free to dissent in whatever manner they wish. By personally attacking others or making asinine, substance-free posts, trolls hurt discussions. And we hear from too many people on a daily basis—people with smart and interesting points of view—who won't go into the discussions because of the trolling. When it dawned on a few of us that we were almost always having our most interesting discussions about our work over e-mail, we knew something was wrong.

Worried that your inner hater will be oppressed? Don't be. Be as critical as you want. Dissent as much as you want. Just remember that if you start personally insulting others, accusing them of crimes or moral failings, or engage in otherwise mindless behavior indicative of someone lacking a proper frontal lobe, you can and will be moderated. If you don't want to be moderated, it's easy. Don't troll.

Actually I'm pretty shocked you have a troll problem here, because I've never seen evidence to suggest a problem here. Out of all the forums I read, this one seems to very polite.

Unless, you're constantly cleaning.

Spike, we have several trolls who have been banned over 15 times!

I chuckled when I saw your Location because three out of our top five or six trolls (those who have been banned over 15 times) are from Winnipeg. Not sure what you guys put in the water out there!

Does seem odd. You wouldn't think there to be many bridges in Winnipeg. Perhaps that's it, homeless Trolls?

Reminds me of the story I read last week where a British man was leaving hateful comments on a memorial page for a teen killed by a train. It's times like these you really wish the internet wasn't quite so anonymous.

I can explain that Hugh. 7/11 is one of the venders that doesn't clean out their Slurpee machines on a regular basis. Fountain pop and Slurpee machines form a black mold in the canister so the effects may causing regular drinkers of the stuff to become trolls. :D

And as we all know Winnipeg is the Slurpee capital of the world. ;)

Spike,
On behalf of DHC and offending posters making fun of you coming from Winnipeg, I would like to apologize for their rudeness. In showing our true kindness, I have asked the 7/11 on the Perimeter RD to offer you 3 free Slurpees. I hope this makes it even and fair.

I know Winnipeg is a nice place, especially when I was there in 97 during the flood. I even got a free t-shirt saying "We survived the flood of the century"

As far as trolling goes, we all do it in a certain way but some are just too brazen. Like jvincent wrote, most of the time, users will report it through the Bad Post report button and is usually removed in the following minutes. Lots going on in the background.

While most people fear trolls, I have them for breakfast! :p

Seriously, I don't believe in going easy with the trolls in the comments sections of my YouTube channel. I attack them mercilessly, questioning their social and sexual skills, their genealogy, and even their species! I make it VERY personal, with the goal to make the offender either give up posting any more comments, or make them cry like a newborn puppy or kitten just before I crush them under my scum covered heavy workboots! *CRUNCH!*

With everyone else, I'm very respectful and well behaved.

One exception however is spam. I delete those messages right away.
