Area 51 is for posting and discussion of any computer model of any experimental antenna by Antenna Modelers and Builders

Area 51 is not for casual builders or newcomers to ask questions or look for useable home antennas. Participants here are expected to fairly well "know their stuff".

If an antenna design is shown to be worthwhile for general public consumption we will move it out of Area 51 into the main Antenna Research & Development Forum.

Just remember what the ancient map makers wrote when they had no further info to illustrate: "Beyond here be dragons!"

Vertical Bi-Quad

Hello everyone, recently I made an antenna from a thick copper electrical wire. It is vertically oriented in “double bi-quad” shape with 120 mm between center lines of each square side. There is a reflector located behind the antenna. This reflector is made of pretty dense galvanized mesh 10mm x 10mm. The distance is 67 mm from the center line of the antenna to the mesh. The antenna feed is connected with 4:1 balun in the middle made of RG-59 TV-cable. It works exceptionally well and pulls in just under 20 stations. I can not evaluate this antenna and ask for help if someone with proper knowledge would run this setup through any digital simulation program. Any help is appreciated -- thanks.

I built the new antenna with uneven loops and it outperformed the antenna with equal loops. The old antenna stopped at Ch.50 and the new one picked up six more channels in the 60's range, even though the location was not as good as the old antenna -- there was not enough coax. Unfortunately, all of new channels are either Spanish, Korean, Portugese or Chinese and two audio channels only... I just wanted to prove the case. Again, thanks to everyone who helped. :)

Bigger and Better(?) Brother

Hello everyone. I have built another crooked antenna as you can see on the pictures. Having some marginal success with the first variant, most likely because it was scaled after an industrial production unit, the next step was, naturally, to make it bigger and better. Here we go -- with straight logic of a person who have limited exposure in this field, I bought 20 feet of 12 gage solid wire for $4 and went to work... Then I labored for about thirty minutes and bent it in rhomboid contraption. I have no idea if it works properly, but it does work. If the first variant delivered 22 channels, this bigger brother got me 31 channels. One of them is NOAA marine weather for navigation. It clearly indicates that the contraption gets something, but I have no idea what exactly. Here is the list of programs I definitely can view and listen to:

If someone would help me to make sense out this beast and analyze it, I would be very thankful. Perhaps adding a reflector would help a little? For the reference, the antenna is located in the NYC Metropolitan Area, approximately 12 miles directly south of Manhattan. Perhaps this is the main reason the antenna gets any channels at all... Hello, everyone! Thanks for directing me in the right direction. I ran the numbers on this antenna and the output appears to be a good one. However I do not have the required experience to evaluate this antenna completely. Can anyone please help me? Thank you.

Interesting, but this antenna works on its side as well. It becomes a sectoral 9 dBi antenna with 90* V and 90* H distribution pattern. Polarization is vertical. If scaled, it would work for cell phones and WiFi requiring wide area of coverage, I think. Cheers.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but the polarization is VERTICAL for the above antenna. Don't we need HORIZONTAL polarization for TV signals? As shown this Franklin Array has pretty bad chart for the horizontal pattern.

I got to think how to get to this aspect on my own. Cheers!

Hello everyone!

As I live in a major metropolitan area, there are many TV stations around. The problem with receiving them, however, is that a highly directional UHF antennas are usually designed for a very narrow orientation. So, I decided to come up with an omni-directional UHF antenna, which is capable of receiving TV signals from all directions. An interesting fact is that one of six lobes is more sensitive and it could be directed to some distant station.

Hello everyone!

I bring to the public's opinion an antenna for a wide sectoral coverage which my guts feels would be a good one . It reaches 17 dBi !

Unfortunately, I do not have the skills required for the polishing process. For example, I still do not know how to obtain gross and net gains... ^_^

Would someone help me by either completely decimating this "design" or somehow improving it? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
