I need to extract HD shows off my 8300HD and would prefer a firewire digital stream than re-encoding over component. I have tried several ways to get a firefire stream out of the box when playing a prerecorded show, but I get nothing. Even the old DV camcorder I used would only show a blue screen rather than the currently-playing recording.

Before I spend any more days on this, maybe I should check: has Rogers disabled the firewire port in recent years?

As far as I know, the only way to get video off the 8300 was via SD composite video.

Hello Blaq,
If you have component cables you can connect it to another hard drive that has recording capabilities. You would need to play the recordings off the 8300 while it's saving on the other hard drive.

I think we're getting sidetracked. Component cables carry a video signal, not data; they can't be connected to a hard drive.

Basically, I have 2 options:

1) Extract a digital copy of the recording via firewire
2) Digitize the analog video signal carried by the 8300HD's component outputs, using a Hauppauge HD-PVR2 for example.

I'm aiming for #1, because it'll transfer the recording bit-for-bit as a digital video file instead of recompressing the analog video. I want maximum quality. But that's only if the firewire port is active as of 2014, which I'm having trouble confirming.
