Mobile phones have had common origin chip sets and displays for decades from suppliers like Samsung, Seiko/Epson, Fuji, Matsushita, etc. etc. just like almost all other consumer electronics devices have. It makes for some interesting corporate decisions indeed. :)

It's also very inbred. The big electronics manufacturers are selling each other parts and technology all the time. They also have many joint ventures. Apple is the largest tech company in the world. Samsung Electronics is the world's largest maker of memory chips and a leading cell phone maker. Is this news really that surprising?

And thats only the start of it. Just think of all the patent royalties that are being paid out. For example, Android and WP7 phones with "swipes" all owe Apple a piece of the action. And I'm sure it goes both ways.
