Aside from the Android Market app itself, Facebook, Google Maps and Gmail are the most used Android apps used by American according the first mobile media rankings from Nielsen.
Using data collected from on-device meters on thousands of Android smartphones, Nielsen measured the "active reach," the percentage of Android owners who used an app within the past 30 days, to determine which were the most popular.
The app with the greatest percentage reach was Google Maps with about three out of four Android users flipping it on at least once during the 30 day period. Other apps that reached more than half of all Android users were Gmail, Facebook, Google Search and YouTube.
The top app among women was Facebook at 81%, compared to 67% for men. The top app among men was Google Maps at 77% vs 72% for women. The top game for both sexes was Angry Birds which reached 27% and 24% of men and women respectively.
