In the second quarter of 2010, more Americans watched video on their mobile devices than ever before according to a recent report from Nielsen.

The research firm found that while the number of people watching videos on their mobile phones remains relatively small compared to TV, the numbers are increasing.

On a year-to-year basis, the number of people watching mobile video in a given month increased 43% from 15.2 million in the second quarter of 2009 to 22 million in the same period in 2010.

The amount of time Americans spent watching video each month was up almost 7%, from 3 hours and 15 minutes in Q2 2009 to 3 hours and 37 minutes in Q2 2010.

Teens with mobile video capabilities watched the most each month at seven hours and thirteen minutes with usage declining as respondents go older.

By comparison, Nielsen reported that 284.3 million Americans watched television each month in the second quarter of 2010 for an average of almost 144 hours per month. That works out to almost 41 billion hours of television watched at home versus about 57 million hours on mobile devices.
