The world's largest online retailer has just introduced the Amazon Prime membership program to Canadians.

But the $79 membership fee for the year, which offers unlimited free two-day shipping regardless of the cost of goods ordered, leaves many Canadian customers wanting more.

US customers subscribing to Prime also receive free Kindle e-book lending and the Instant Video streaming service. Amazon says these digital perks are not included in the Canadian package and it has no immediate plans to offer the freebies.

Steve Oliver, country manager for Amazon.ca said: "Amazon Prime offers its members the convenience of fast, free shipping on millions of eligible items, whether the order is for a single DVD or a kitchen mixer. There is no minimum purchase amount and no need to consolidate orders, so Canadians from coast-to-coast can enjoy a simpler, faster shopping experience."

Also included in the basic Prime membership are one-day shipping for $3.99 per item as well as free standard shipping to rural areas.

Interested Canadian customers should visit www.amazon.ca/prime to start a free one month trial.
