I just inherited a 9242. Current receiver is a 6131 with an external hard drive for
PVR capabilities. Dish is up on the roof, but looks like the dual LNB feeds into an SW21 switch that is located very near the dish, then a single cable feeds off the roof and into the house. We went through an SD HD upgrade a long time ago.

Question - requirements to install and use the dual tuner 9242? New LNB and a separator? Additional cable runs into to the house?
My "inheritance" also included a DPP quad LNB. AK74-BTE

Second question...can I just plug the external drive into the "new" 9242 and retain all of our recorded shows?

Thanks in advance.

The DPP quad and separator at the 9242 should be all you need. The single cable can be used as is. The sw21 won't be needed.

The way bell receivers handle external drives on PVR and none PVR models is different, as 57 says, you will not be able to use those recordings on the 9242.

A 6131 records directly to the External Drive.
A 9242 records to the internal drive then you can 'archive' it to the external drive, so a 9242 cannot see the 'real time' recordings.

I think putting the EHD in the 9242 will bring up a prompt asking if you want to format the drive. If you do, you will loose all the recordings.

ppartlo, The 9242 also has an OTA tuner, giving you the capability to record 3 programs at one time while watching 2 recorded programs at the same time. You're going to have so much fun!
If for any reason it stops working it is well worth repairing, and for the most part, easily done.
On a side note, you can have up to 6 receivers on account at no additional charge, so when you're rewiring for OTA run another line for the 6131, and you can still access all your recordings on the EHD that way.

I did the same upgrade some time last year, replaced my 6131 with the 9242 and it was well worth it. I was practically in the same boat as you, I had connected an unused external HDD to the 6131 and filled it up with recordings, however I was well aware they would not be able to transfer to the 9xxx series receivers. I accepted it and moved on, but I do own a standard definition DVD recorder and was able to archive "some" Of my shows onto DVD disk so I could format the HDD and re-use it for computer use.

I also am well aware the 9242 has an Antenna tuner but where I live I have not been able to make any use from it, I get all the channels that are broadcast on Antenna thru the satellite feed anyways and they come in crystal clear. If I ever have to move I will try the antenna tuner but for now its ok for me not to need it. and yes ExDilbert is correct you can diplex both satellite and antenna on the same cable but just be careful and make sure the connections are done properly.

It should be possible to watch recordings on the 6131 without a dish connection. It may stop working eventually. Archiving recordings is another issue.
