Here are 5 best fitness trackers of 2016- a gift that's perfect for yourself or that active person on your list:

1) Fitbit Charge 2

The Fitbit Charge 2 has been labeled “the best Fitbit of the bunch” by CNET. It is a great tracker for the average person.

As CNET comments, if you are a super-duper long distance runner venturing far from your phone, or a SWIMMER (this thing isn’t waterproof, don’t swim with it!) it’s good to go with something else.

But if you want a fitness tracker that performs well and wears well for the average walker, jogger, and gym-goer, this is a great bet.

This band tracks heart rate continuously, during workouts and at rest, and also tracks all-day activity, steps, minutes active and calories burned.

It can also follow your sleep patterns and users get GPS functionality in running mode.

For those who want to follow their running pace and distance, if your smartphone is nearby, Fitbit Charge 2 allows you to do this, too.

With the ability to swap in new wrist bands for a change of style, and a five-day battery life, it's a great catch.

2) Garmin Vivosmart

Garmin’s Vivosmart fitness tracker is waterproof and can be worn swimming, as well as sd in the shower. So, if you’re a fish, this one’s for you.

The Vivosmart fitness tracker tracks your steps, distance traveled, the calories you burn, and how much you sleep. The battery life is said to be up to 7 days on a single charge, which can be a big plus for those who go for endurance, and need something that will last more than a few hours.

An always-on touchscreen display will show your stats in all light levels, so you can see them even in direct sunlight. And for those who liked to stay connected even while they work out, the Vivosmart allows you to receive updates, calls, texts and other alerts via Bluetooth, from your phone.

3) Fibit Flex 2

This one is also for swimmers!

Fitbit’s Flex 2 is different from the Charge 2 in that, you can dive right in and have no worries.

It’s waterproof, and the only Fitbit that can track swimming.

When looking at the best fitness trackers, this one doesn’t have a display though, or heart rate tracking, so just be aware of what you are buying.

What does the Flex 2 do? Well, as stated above, it can track your swimming, as well as your biking, running, walking, and sleeping as well as provide you with reminders to move.

It also provides call and text notifications through flashing, colour-coded lights.

This fitness wearable works with the Fitbit App, and syncs automatically with over 200 smartphones and windows devices, and provides a battery life of up to 5 days which allows for ease of use.

4) Bellabeat LEAF fitness tracker

Bellabeat’s LEAF is a fitness tracker that, as warable.com states, comes with “more than a few female friendly twists”.

What are they? This stylish device can track your steps and exercise time as well as when you menstruate and your fertility patterns throughout the month. Bonus!

Designed by a Slovenian/Croatian start-up, it’s nice to have something aimed at the women in the room.

5) Samsung Gear Fit2

This android fitness wearable from Samsung is one of the few top devices that doesn’t track your sleep. That being said, it’s still a great performer.

With a battery life of 3-4 days, it tracks your activity, and comes with a heart rate monitor and integrated GPS. You don’t need a Samsung phone to use it with your smartphone, and users can stream music via Bluetooth, so you can bring those tunes with you while you run.
