I am new to the rptv scene and am not sure if my set is acting normal. I recently purchased the 46w500 and noticed that the left edge is blurry/unfocused - the blurry portion is about 3" in width, top to bottom. The right edge is very sharp. Magic Focus does not seem to fix it and I can't seem to fix it in the manual convergence mode.

So my question is - is this normal? The place I bought it from does not exactly have an exchange policy like Future Shop, so essentially, I am stuck with the unit. Does my Hitachi Warranty cover this sort of thing? I bought it approximately 3 weeks ago. Any help or comments are appreciated. Thx in advance.

It's probably just that your TV needs focussing.

CRT RPTVs have three tubes that can be focussed both mechanically and electronically. Even if your convergence is correct it may still need focussing.

If you're brave / willing you can do this yourself or you can get an ISF tech to do it for you as part of tune up.

As a bit of anecdotal evidence, I finally (after a couple of years) cracked open my Toshiba and did a manual focus of the lenses. I don't know how I put up with it for so long. The picture is so much better now.

Since you say your focus is OK on part of the screen, I'd suspect a misalligned mirror or CRTs that may need mechanical "positioning" for proper focus. I don't think an electronic focus will solve the problem.

You shouldn't have to put up with this, so call Hitachi/or the store, tell them the problem and ask for an expert on Hitachis.
