I want to say, on-topic, that the show had 67 scenes of torture and it appears more and more to be used as an endorsement for that. So it's not one my favorites any longer.

There does seem to be a bit more gore this season for sure. I still love the show and the "real-time" aspect of the episodes.

Too bad they were not able to get Donald Sutherland to play Jack's Dad. That would have been sweet.

Cheers.

os,

I'm not sure the show "endorses" torture. They are trying to make it realistic by portraying interrogation techniques used in the intelligence world.

I'm not sure there's much of a choice given the nature of the plot? What would you suggest they do to terrorists they capture and volunterily withold vital information?

shabbs, I believe (perhaps you knew this) Donald Sutherland was not available for this shoot. Conflicting schedules is the reason. Too bad, I agree.

Yeah - I knew they tried to get him but he was filming somewhere else and was unavailable.

So you are saying that the intelligence world is currently using the "techniques" of interrogation used by Jack Bauer  ? Are you kidding? Torture is illegal. They will end up in jail if they'd do something like that (I mean in a lawful country, not in a police state).

The show may not endorse torture, but it is used by American right wing to justify the use of torture to extract information. Even the US military has requested that the show (which is very popular among the young soldiers sent to Iraq) stop using (and abusing) torture in the show. Search the Internet for "24 +torture". There is a whole debate out there.

os, you are thinking anybody abides by this rule and offers a suspected terrorist coffee and donuts for a little sit down around the kitchen table?

And when the guy, after finishing his snack, politely turns down their request for information, they just escort him back to his prison cell for an afternoon nap?

I don't think anybody tortures anyone for the fun of it. As a matter of fact, you can see how Jack Bauer (who's been tortured in the past and more recently while captive in China) struggles with having to resort to torture.

What alternative is there?

I read in a subsequent interview that Donald indicated he would love to work with his son Keifer but would like it to be a separate project rather than appear as a guest star in Keifer's show. There was no real scheduling conflict afterall.

Okay now, let's end all this "torture" talk and government endorsement or whatever.

This is the last time I am going to issue a reminder about the TOPIC of this thread. Stick to it.

I don't really understand what's the problem with discussing the representation of torture in this series. Isn't this thread about "24"? The use of torture to obtain information is a big part of the show and it stirred quite a debate.

Anyone else think Jack's sister in Law is smoking hot?
Big time!

Curious to find out what's the history between her and Jack? (I have a few theories but not sure I want to ruin anything for everyone).

As I said, let's stick to THE SHOW. Yes, torture is part of the show. To expand the topic as a critique of the government is HIJACKING the thread.

Again, and for the very last time....TOPIC!!!!

Ok, whoever said they loved the "real time" aspect of the show......what are you smokin', bro? :)

I mean, Jack went from being bedraggled and barely able to walk to clean and mean, running and gunning in about 20 minutes in hour 1 this year.

if there's one aspect this show could lose, it's that "real-time" aspect.

Driving around LA at the best of times is gridlock. Add in a nuclear bomb going off....nobody's moving ANYWHERE on those freeways anytime soon.
