Each year, Google examines the billions of queries that people around the world have typed into Google search to discover the zeitgeist—the spirit of the times.

After filtering out spam and repeat queries, the fastest rising query throughout the world - when compared to how often it was used the previous year - was "michael jackson" while the fastest falling term was "Beijing 2008".

In Canada, the fastest rising was Twitter, followed by Blackberry and yahoo mail. The most popular search terms were facebook and youtube. Not surprisingly, the fastest rising news search term on Google Canada this year was swine flu.
